Echuca in Victoria (Australia) is a city of about 10,000 people situated on the banks of the Murray River (Moama is on the northern side in NSW).
Echuca is situated close to the junction of the Goulburn, Campaspe and Murray Rivers.
The expansion of the railways from Melbourne to most parts of Victoria, as well as improving roads and fickle river conditions, all combined to lessen Echuca's importance, and by the 1890s her paddlesteamer fleet was in decline.

Echuca in Victoria, founded in 1853, by ex-convict Henry Hopwood, from Bolton, in Lancashire, England, became a very important commercial centre.
Hopwood, realising that Echuca was an ideal crossing place for the cattle from the North, on their way to the gold fields at Bendigo, set up a punt.
Wool from the Riverina and Redgum for railway sleepers from the forests along the Murray River were transferred at the Echuca wharf, from the river boats, to the railway and thence to Melbourne.

Echuca, once the largest inland port in Australia, wit h her twin sister, Moama, is today a thriving tourist centre.
Echuca is the larger of two towns and situated in the state of Victoria, on the southern side of the Murray which forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales.
Maiden's arch enemy was Henry Hopwood, founder of Echuca, who was sentenced to transportation in the same court in Lancaster, England, on the same day as Maiden in 1834.

They were certainly generous serves though, which meant we were unable to sample the excellent range of cheeses or try desserts.
