Margerine Eclipse by Stereolab: Album Reviews
Margerine Eclipse, the band's tenth full-length, can sound a bit like a collage of pieces from their nine other albums, but the overall effect is more retrospective than repetitive.
The album trades in the bright yet somehow bittersweet pop at which the group have always excelled, albeit in a more streamlined form than it's taken over the course of their past few albums.
Margerine Eclipse can't really be called a return to form since Stereolab didn't really deviate from the form to begin with, but it still offers a reinvigorated sound that rewards the patience of fans who have stuck with the band this long.

Prophet of the Last Eclipse | Luca Turilli
The album is also a nice evolution in Luca Turilli's sound in ways; first, as aforementioned, the album sounds like a symphony with a metal band as opposed to a metal band with a symphony.
The album closer, the epic title track, is nothing short of stunning in parts and though with some weak links in the middle section, is a fitting climax for the album.
At times this album has a heavenly beauty unmatched even by Turilli's past efforts, at other times it is as heavy and aggressive as the superhuman Dawn of Victory album.

New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock CO-CZ
The album is 40 minutes long and consists of seven songs between 4 to 8 minutes and all of them are very melodic and sometimes beautiful, but overall the album feels slow and a bit boring.
Oh yeah, the album is heavy on nature mirroring the growth of the spirit of man. Greenfingered metaphors abound throughout as this track hauntingly similar to some of the works by Anthony Phillips introduces the next song, "The Flower".
The first two albums with their side-long grooves of cosmic mostly instrumental riffing are the best, the ultimate in trippy space rock, like an enhancement of the Ash Ra Tempel sound.

Geoff Farina: Reverse Eclipse: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The trajectory of Reverse Eclipse is an upside-down bell curve, that precariously situates its quality material atop beginning and ending crests, around an abysmally deep trench of loungy detritus, cornball jazz fret-petting, and beat-inspired (or rather expired) lyrics.
It is, after all, a solo album where Geoff finds himself unfettered by outside input and considerations, thus perfectly free to chase his jazzy muse deep into the jungles of self-indulgence like some second-rate jazz-club Marlow after his guitar-hero Kurtz.
This album, however, is substantially more inconsistent and you've got to hack some points off for that.

It was reported that most of the people who travelled up did not see the eclipse due to cloud, mainly those who travelled to Orkney, Shetland, Dunnet Head and John O' Groats.
The sky seemed, however, to be clearing as time went on and we were hopeful of seeing the eclipse moving into the annular phase just after sunrise.
The mist would intermittently obscure the sun but it was still a spectacular eclipse as eclipses go - at least as good as Cornwall 1999.

 Stereolab - Margarine Eclipse
The typically eccentrically-titled Margarine Eclipse is Stereolab's first album since that tragedy - although it's not a fully fledged tribute per se, the spirit of Hanson pervades the album, with the most obvious nod being on Feel And Triple, with its sad backing vocals of, "Goodbye Mary".
So Margarine Eclipse is unlikely to bring Stereolab any kind of commercial breakthrough, but that will hardly bother them or their fans.
This is a fine tribute to their much missed colleague, and while they'll probably always remain an acquired taste, those people who have already devoured any of the band's back catalogue will find much to please them here.

Both the words, recited and shaped by Roberto from his own homonymous poem that suggested the title of the album, and the oblique minimalism of the complex musical texture made of flowing space sounds, represent the abstract neo-expressionistic substratum of the whole corpus of the work.
The title of this new double album is taken from the last words spoken by Hamlet before his dying in the homonymous Shakespearian's tragedy.
The whole corpus of the work is an ectoplasm of sounds flowing from the earth surface towards the sky; with their electric and acoustic guitars, some pedal effects and a series of weird space-toys, MCIAA light a candle as a bright beacon in the darkness of the Great Void.

The album cover features a typical Hipgnosis design that actually foreshadowed some of the images from "The Wall", with a family sitting on a sparse beach, wearing gas masks.

This is something like the twelfth Stereolab album and the first since the untimely death of Mary Hansen.
Mary is remembered on the lovely track ‘Feel and Triple’ which sounds so personal and intimate that it’s almost like intruding on someone else’s grief but the affection that they held (and still hold) her in is evident.
Elsewhere, the album is pretty much what you’d expect from Stereolab.

No Ripcord Album Review - Stereolab - "Margerine Eclipse"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
I recently dismissed Stereolab’s entire raison d’etre in my review of Instant 0 in the Universe, presuming myself to be safe in the knowledge that their best was irretrievably behind them.
After the tragic and untimely death of Mary Hansen, Laetitia Sadier is left with sole vocal responsibilities, and whilst the album doesn’t necessarily suffer due to this, the loss of Hansen is felt most in the absence of her voice in the mix.
Obviously, it would be presumptuous to infer that any stylistic decisions have occurred as a result of the band’s loss, but the wealth of positive and beautiful material on Margerine Eclipse, which is dedicated to her memory, feels like an appreciation and celebration of life, and makes for a fitting tribute to her talents.

 CD Times - Stereolab
Stereolab released their maxi-EP Instant 0 In The Universe towards the end of last year and it was a brilliant five-track collection of songs that fluctuated violently between stomping euro-grooves and melodic ambiance, with lead temptress Lætitia Sadier's exotic vocals dancing on top.
Margerine Eclipse, the band's first full-length album release since the sad death of Mary Hansen, is a postmodernist's wet-dream.
Lush instrumentation flows fluidly through the album to form a cohesive base, and even though songs often change structure and tempo in mid-flow you always have faith in the places you are taken musically.

Eclipse --produced by Grateful Dead drummer and world-music champion Mickey Hart --exploits elastic rhythms and repetitive motifs in moody, majestic pieces like "Helalisa," the lovelorn song of an Egyptian field hand, and "Your Love Is Ever Young," inspired by Egypt's late queen of song, Um Kalthoum.
