Topic: Eclipse cycle

Eclipse cycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eclipses may occur repeatedly, separated by some specific interval of time: this interval is called an eclipse cycle.
Eclipses may occur when the Earth and Moon are on one line with the Sun, and the shadow of one body cast by the Sun falls on the other.

Saros   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A Saros cycle is an eclipse cycle of 223 synodic months (period from one new moon to the next), or approximately 242 draconic months (the period of the Moon to return to the ascending node of its orbit, i.e.
Thus an eclipse (which happens when a conjunction or opposition of the Sun and Moon occurs in one of the nodes, that is, crossing the plane of the orbit) occurs again one Saros later.
The name "Saros" was first given to the eclipse cycle by Edmund Halley in 1691, who took it from a lexicon by the Byzantine scholar Suidas from the 11th century.

Now an eclipse does not happen at every New or Full Moon, because the plane of the orbit of the Moon around the Earth is tilted with respect to the plane of the orbit of the Earth around the Sun (the ecliptic).
Now the time it takes for the Moon to return to a node, the so-called draconic month, is less than the time it takes for the Moon to return to the Sun: the synodic month.
The period to return to the same node is called eclipse year, and is about 1/9th year shorter than a sidereal year because of the precession of the nodes of the Moon's orbit in about 9 years.

Chapter 1: PREDICTABLE PERIODIC EVENTS-PART II
If a total eclipse is followed or preceded by another, then the eclipses bracketing these two events will be either one or two penumbral or one penumbral and or one partial eclipse.
A total eclipse of the sun is followed by an annular eclipse occurring 36 degrees further east.
The moon is displaced 0.9 degrees with respect to its node (12% of the metonic cycle displacement).

 The Saros Cycle
Eclipses depend upon the synchronization of synodic and draconic periods.
This, however, represents but one of many eclipse cycles; and almost always, when one speaks of an eclipse cycle, it's in reference to the Saros.
Yet, tales abound about the philosopher Thales using the Saros to predict the solar eclipse of 585 B.C. Saros cycles don't last forever or indefinitely, because realignments of full Moon with its node are not perfect.

NASA - Eclipses and the Saros
In the case of Saros 145, the peak occurs with the eclipse of 2342 Mar 08 (gamma=0.008).
To illustrate, the ten central solar eclipses of 1891, 1909, 1927, 1945, 1963, 1981, 1999, 2017, 2035 and 2053 are all members of Saros 145.
The total solar eclipse of 1999 August 11 is number 21 of 77 eclipses in Saros 145, and it is the 5th of 41 total eclipses in the series.

Re: Stonehenge et al (75-stone model)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
We know this cycle as the nineteen-year Metonic cycle, but use is made here of its lesser known property of also being a fairly good short-term eclipse cycle (38 to 57 years in duration).
A 235 full-moon cycle (of nineteen solar years) can be seen to be reemphasised by the nineteen bluestones later erected, in a horseshoe inside the five sarsen trilithons.
This (the greater utility of the "Saros" cycle for eclipse prediction) and the examination of similar numerical developments in Babylonian and Mayan astronomy lead directly to a consideration of the 73-stone sarsen model.

SPACE.com -- Solar Eclipse Facts: FAQ about eclipses
Eclipses only occur if the satellite of a planet is located within 0.5 degrees of the plane of the ecliptic, on a line that passes through the center of the Sun and Earth.
Eclipses of the Moon created by Earth's shadow are actually less numerous than solar eclipses; however, each lunar eclipse covers about half of Earth's surface.
Successive eclipses in the Saros cycle happen one-third of the way around the world from each other, and after three Saros cycles, the eclipse returns to nearly the same geographic location after 54 years and 33 days.

The Metonic Cycle and the Saros   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Since it is almost equal to 20 eclipse years, 6,932.4 days, it is possible for a series of four or five eclipses to occur on the same dates 19 years apart.
The metonic cycle was used to determine how intercalary months could be inserted into a lunar calendar so that the calendar year and the tropical (seasonal) year were kept in step.
He mistakenly connected the naming of a cycle of 223 synodic months by the tenth century Greek lexicographer Suidas with the eclipse cycle of the same period.

The Lunar Planner: This Month's Lunar Theme
Eclipses occur when the Sun, Earth and Moon align with the lunar nodes, either the south lunar node or the north lunar node, thus placing the moon on the ecliptic plane.
This solar eclipse occurs on the Moon's south node and the lunar eclipse occurs on the Moon's north node.
This south-node solar eclipse (and this lunar cycle) is about freeing us from the past, our past life scenarios, our roles in life, or how we see and present ourselves in the world, thus bringing a sense of freedom from what we identify ourselves with and the hold those identities can have upon our lives.

Lunar Eclipse & Solar Eclipse Descriptions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the case of a Lunar Eclipse, it is the Earth (us) blocking the light of the Sun's reflection upon the Moon during a Full Moon event.
Since the life of each Saros is trackable as each of the connecting Eclipses cycle through time, it is logical to expect that each subsequent Eclipse event, as a result of the inital Saros birth, is an expansion upon the original Ecliptic arrival.
Instead, the Eclipses are linked together as a family of events that occur as a group approximately 18 years apart.

Eclipse Primer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Each eclipse in a Saros family shares many similar characteristics, including the length of totality at various points along the shadow’s path, the shape and width of the shadow’s path, and the places on Earth where the shadow’s path tracks across.
The longest total eclipse of this family should occur on June 25, 2522, yielding 7 minutes, 12 seconds of totality, which is close to the theoretical maximum amount.
All the different families are interlaced in the 354 day cycle, while eclipses of the same family are separated by the 18 year, 11.33 day cycle.

 Eclipses in History and Literature
Widespread Oriental belief held that an eclipse was caused by an invisible dragon devouring the Sun.
The eclipse was predicted by Thales, the celebrated Greek astronomer and philosopher, but the prediction was probably not known to the warring nations.
In the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was an eclipse of the Sun which was greater than any known before and in the sixth hour of the day it became night; so that stars appeared in the heaven; and a great earthquake that broke out in Bithynia destroyed the greatest part of Nicaea.

The first Planetary Cycle began before your were even born.  I'm talking about your Prenatal Eclipse--the last Solar Eclipse that took place before your birth.  The Prenatal Eclipse has a strong influence on you throughout your life.  Some even suggest that this Eclipse propelled your soul into its present incarnation.
Solar Eclipses have a cycle of approximately nineteen years.  When you are about nineteen years old there is usually a Solar Eclipse at approximately the same degree of the zodiac as your Prenatal Eclipse.
For instance, you might move out of your parents' home and go away to college at that age, or become engaged to be married, or actually marry.  You could have a child, or you may meet someone who leads you down a whole new path in life.
