	West African currency union to miss target
		Plans for a new common currency shared by five West African countries are unlikely to be ready by the targeted July launch date, Charles Soludo, governor of Nigeria's central bank, said yesterday.
		Plans for the new Eco currency are subject to convergence criteria based on the Maastricht treaty macroeconomic targets that were used for launching the euro in 1999.
		The naira currency had appreciated in nominal terms by 3 per cent against the dollar last year, and the central bank had accumulated a sufficient "war chest" of reserves to keep exchange rate fluctuations within a band of plus or minus 3 per cent this year, he said.

		Dr Apraku, however, said to enable the common currency to achieve its objective of integrating the economies of the Sub-Region it was "crucial for all of us in the ECOWAS to reduce barriers to trade and implement the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme and the Protocol of free movement of persons and goods."
		He said the introduction of the ECO would remove the difficulty of trading in the Sub-Region and remove the burden of converting currencies for trading.

		The goal of the Single Global Currency Association is the establishment of a single global currency, within a global monetary union and managed by a global central bank by 2024.
