| | Ecotourism Definition |
 | | After much discussion it was agreed (not unanimously, I must add) that the most appropriate thing was to accept a universal definition of ecotourism as an international framework (in order to understand what we are talking about), and that the official IUCN definition (which is my own) should be accepted. |
 | | "Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations (Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)". |
 | | In countries where poor rural communities rely on natural areas to maintain a subsistence life style, the contribution to conservation may be measured by the degree to which the impact of local communities is reduced. |
