Ecocide describes our destruction of the natural ecology of the earth’s environments for the sake of the development of our civilization, and it is a term for the natural death of life on earth and for the planet earth itself as a living, evolving entity.

JURIST - Dellapenna: The Iraqi Campaign Against the Marsh Arabs - Ecocide as Genocide
There are numerous other examples of ecocide that one can identify in the twentieth century or earlier.
What is unique about this instance of ecocide, and what sets it apart from other instances of ecocide, is that the destruction was for the purpose of destruction and not for some, arguably beneficial purpose such as economic development.
Here ecocide was adopted as a deliberate mechanism for bringing about genocide.

Cross Currents: The Green Face of God: Christianity in an Age of Ecocide - Critical Essay
The "spiritual" origins of ecocide are apparent in our head-long rush to disaster; as in the case of the alcoholic, we know we are destroying our lives but we can no longer stop ourselves from doing so.
If ecocide is a disease of the soul then it requires spiritual medicine--the medicine of healthy, rather than toxic, Christian values and ideas.
It is both the origin of the ecocidal "disease" from which we suffer and its "cure," insofar as it provides resources for a new green mindset toward nature that is a prophylactic against antinature attitudes and habits.

 Ecocide in Yugoslavia
With the application of ecocide, that is, massive and organized environment degradation in a war conflict, the world was faced for the first time during the Vietnam War.
Between 1962 and 1970, the US armed forces threw 50, 000 tons of herbicides onto the territory of Vietnam and those were: 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, cacodyl acid and pichlorame, commonly known as orange, purple, blue and white gasses.
Ecocide means an introduction into genocide, because by preemption of life conditions and a manifold increase of health risks in one people's environment, the people itself is being destroyed.

The authors address the origins and symptoms of a degraded environment caused by "heedless industrialization compounded by failure to measure the social costs of exploiting limited natural resources." They point to the beginnings of the problem in the Bolshevik revolution and leaders' emphasis on rapid industrial development.

'Ecocide' is structured, as the introduction puts it, in five parts.
This, Broswimmer has no doubt, is the result of capitalism and globalization, and the solution, as he regularly explains, is the replacement of market forces with democratic ecological socialism..'in my view, the creation of ecological democracy is a practical and ethical imperative for a more socially just and ecologically sustainable planet'.
we live in an age of ecocide, caught somewhere between an unparalleled destructive industrial past and an uncertain future threat holds out either the spectre of annihilation or the promise of ecological democracy.

Book Review: Ecocide of Native America
In just a short amount of time, the non-Indians who came to Turtle Island (Mother Earth) with an attitude of dominion over the earth and a lack of understanding that man and nature are interrelated has quickly lead to the poisoning and destruction of the environment and people.
Shocked and appalled by the crass industrial corporations who have committed ecocide and genocide in the face of the United States environmental laws, like the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, that have been implemented in the early 1970's to prevent such poisoning and destruction to Mother Earth.
"Ecocide" of Native America is also cultural genocide because the traditional ways to live, of providing for their families, and their spiritual connection with the Natural World has become greatly impeded by the poisoning of the waters, air, and the destruction of Mother Earth.

Representations of Ecocide in Blade Runner and Neuromancer
While not explicitly revealed, it is clear that 'ecocide', the destruction of 'normal' ecological systems, has resulted from global warfare and the ultra-utilitarianism and exploitation of late capitalist production techniques.
Ridley Scott has thus constructed a paradoxical world of 'ecocide' in which humanity can escape the barren wasteland that they have created, to Off-world colonies, yet to facilitate their escape they have had to create a race of slaves who, in turn, desire to escape their bonds.
The theme of escape, then, appears omnipresent in 2019, the human race trying to escape their ecocidal homeworld, those humans left behind unable to escape due to some physical impairments, and to facilitate the escape of humanity to other worlds a new underclass has been 'replicated', who, in turn, wish to escape their bonds.

The Green Face of God: Christianity in an Age of Ecocide by Mark I Wallace in CrossCurrents
God, then, is so internally related to the universe that the specter of ecocide raises the risk of deicide: to wreak environmental havoc on the earth is to run the risk that we will do irreparable harm to the Love and Mystery we call God.
The wager of this model is that while God and world are not identical to one another, their basic unity and common destiny raises the possibility that ongoing assaults against the earth's biotic communities may eventually result in permanent injury to the divine life itself.
In an ecocidal age, I have proposed that we reenvision the Spirit as the cruciform Spirit who bears in herself the deep wounds caused by our sins against the earth community.

Ecocide is needless, but not in the minds of the perpetrators when we consider their psychology as driven by their culture.

Struggle for the Land: Native North American Resistance to Genocide, Ecocide, and Colonization by Ward Churchill   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-06)
The reason for this paradox is clear: the riches of North America’s indigenous nations continue to be channeled into the settler’s economy.
By focusing upon certain modes of resource exploitation—uranium mining, coal stripping, hydropower generation and water diversion—Churchill demonstrates clearly that the effects of state/ corporate business in the mostly native-populated hinterlands of the continent are as ecocidal as they are genocidal.
The ecological havoc being wreaked cannot be contained within reservation areas, and therefore poses a threat to all North Americans, presenting a common ground upon which Indians and non-Indians alike can and must struggle to repeal the status quo.
