The party was formed in 1893 making it one of the earliest democratic socialist political parties operating in the United Kingdom.
Many ILP members viewed the Labour Party as being too timid and moderate in their attempts at social reform, and consequently many ILP branches chose to affiliate to the British Socialist Party, who in 1920 would play a leading role in the formation of the Communist Party of Great Britain.
This difference of opinion between the ILP and the Labour Party is exemplified by their divergent approaches to the UK's involvement in World War I, which the Labour Party officially supported, whilst the ILP opposed it.

Although the continuing SDP beat the other parties to second place behind William Hague in the Richmond by-election in 1989, by 1990 they finished behind the Official Monster Raving Loony Party in the Bootle by-election.
But those Labour moderates who remained in the party, such as Roy Hattersley, argue that the split in the centre-left both aided the Conservatives and delayed the move of the Labour Party to a centrist position.

Trapped Agenda: Beyond The Referendum Party was written in May 1998, a year after the party polled a miserly 3% in the 1997 British elections to the Westminster Parliament.
The UK Green Party argues that proportional representation will change everything...as does the Liberal democrat party...and fervently believe the Green tactical voters of the past few elections 'first past the post' elections will return to the fold in droves for the Strasbourg Assembly elections in June 1999.
I believe that a better strategy in the UK for the European Green Movement could be to put their trust in William Hague, the new leader of the British Conservative Party, to lead his Conservative and Unionist Party forward to Quintin Hogg's...and Edmund Burke's...conservatism.
