A continuing debate on the practicality of Socialist economics.
This was first stated by Friedrich von Wieser and a good sumation of this case was that of Ludwig von Mises in his article "Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth".

The End of Socialism and the Calculation Debate Revisited by Murray N. Rothbard
And economic calculation itself is not the means of acquiring knowledge, but the very prerequisite of rational action within the setting of the social division of labor.
The article was republished as a monograph by the Mises Institute with a notable postscript by Professor Joseph T. Salerno (Ludwig von Mises, Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth [Auburn, Ma.: Ludwig von Mises Institute, 1990]).

Another example is that Barone, in the course of his alleged "theoretical" solution to the problem of Socialist calculation, himself ridiculed the idea that planning by means of his equations was in any sense workable, especially when we consider the continuing economic variability of the technical coefficients involved.
The Mises demonstration of the impossibility of economic calculation under socialism and of the superiority of private markets in the means of production applied only to the real world of uncertainty, continuing change, and scattered knowledge.
Mises' followers in the debate have continued to develop his basic critique of the impossibility of economic calculation under socialism.

The Idea Shop: The Socialist Economic Calculation Debate and the Austrian Critique of Central Planning
Because the economic issues involved were scientific in nature, it is remarkable that the two sides were unable to reach any sort of mutual understanding during some twenty years of argument (Kirzner, 1988).
The central economic problem in the Austrian view is not how to allocate a fixed “pie” of resources among competing uses, but rather how to mobilize highly diffuse and incomplete knowledge in order to achieve economic coordination (Adaman & Devine, 1994).
The empirical failure of central economic planning in the late 1980s has led to a recent rethinking of socialist economics, and a renewed interest in the apparently prescient arguments of the Austrians made in the SECD (Barkhan and Roemer, 1993).

 The Socialist Calculation Debate
The "Socialist Calculation" debate emerged at the end of the 19th Century.
Although the debate had been effectively on during the emergence of the Marxian School, the formal "Socialist Calculation" debate was first seriously discussed by the Walrasian economist Enrico Barone in a 1908 article on "Ministry of Production in a Collectivist State" which followed up on Pareto's (1896; 1906: p.266-9) own speculations.
Among the more interesting results of this debate was the adoption, in the Soviet Union itself, of the techniques suggested by Lange.

Heterodox Economics: Peter Wynarczyk, "Austrian Economics and the Post-Autistic Economics Challenge", ...
The post-autistic challenge to orthodox economics echoes criticisms that have been made by non-mainstream economists ever since entrenched conventional wisdoms were established within the discipline.
Another notable feature of Austrian economics has been its continued interest in the history of the discipline in general and its own history in particular.
Orthodox economics is beset with behavioural and institutional deficiencies largely caused by its failure to embrace the temporal and non-price dimensions of human activity.

History of Economic Thought: The Austrian School
Knight), the Keynes-Hayek debates on monetary theory and the trade cycle, and the socialist calculation debate of the 1930s and 1940s.
These professional debates pre-occupied not only the Austrian school from the 1870s to 1960s, but the general economics profession as well, and consequently they shaped the development of modern economic thought in general.
Not only are these debates of interest to intellectual historians, but it is my conviction that many of the issues remain unresolved and as such would have profound implications for modern economics if successfully reconstructed.

 Austrian Addiction: February 2006 Archives
I wanted to expound a bit on one of Dr Boettke's recent posts which attributed economic calculation as the critical contribution of the Austrian School.
In Boettke's publication on economic calculation he lays out his position in the great homogenization debate which has rifted scholars between allegedly Misesian and Hayekian lines.
I'll admit that economic calculation is the heart of the Austrian contribution which is mostly exposed in these debates but I am also of the opinion that the socialist calculation debate isn't the have all be all that people make it out to be.

This is an acute lack because the calculation debate is essentially a debate about the theoretical and practical feasibility of classes of algorithms for allocating resources.
The result is a fascinating and pentrating analysis of the single most important debate of the last 200 years----one which actually came close to destroying Western civilization as we know it.

On starting and winning a Public Safety Calculation Debate | Samizdata.net
At the last two Putney Debates, the ones addressed by Simon Davies of Privacy International on May 10, and by Mark Littlewood of Liberty on June 14, I have heard myself giving a little speech and have liked what I heard.
There then followed the "Economic Calculation Debate", in which the likes of Hayek and von Mises did something that they are still not perhaps fully appreciated for.
They stated their theoretical objections to centralised economic planning, and enough people in the West were convinced to keep capitalism bumbling onwards, thus enabling it to triumph utterly against centralised economic planning.

Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth by Ludwig von Mises
"Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth" advances a devastating critique against economic calculation in a socialist economy, inspiring a decades-long debate.

In the economic calculation debate that occurred more than 50 years ago, the issue was whether rational economic calculation is possible in a centrally directed economy.

It is shown why collectivism will predictably fail as an efficient means of coordinating economic activity and it is argued that the institutional framework warrants more attention by agricultural economists.
