Global development was the greatest challenge facing humanity and it required global consensus with everyone doing their part, the Treasury Secretary of the United States told the Economic and Social Council this morning, as it began its substantive session for 2000.
Secretary Lawrence H. Summers told the Council that without strong policies in developing countries and the right approaches from the industrial world, there would be no effective development and no progress.
It recommends that economic and social developments and policies affecting the achievement of the objectives of the previous development decades should be reviewed, not only for developing countries, but also for developed countries and for the international economic system in general.
