 The Namibian Africa News Gabon summit on unrest in Central Africa to resume
The summit in Gabon is being held under the auspices of a different African body, the Economic and Monetary Community of Central African States (CEMAC), at Bongo's initiative.
Patasse on Monday attended a summit in Khartoum, where heads of state decided to create a CAR peacekeeping force made up of troops from the 16 nations of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (COMESSA).
The summit brings together CAR President Ange-Felix Patasse, subject of a failed coup bid in May and Chad's President Idriss Deby, who early last month gave political asylum to the CAR's former armed forces chief of staff, General Francois Bozize, who was linked to the coup attempt.

The CAR hosts one regional organisation, the CEMAC (the Central African Economic and Monetary Community), charged with the economic integration of the Cameron, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Congo and the CAR.
It also forms part of the CEEAC (The Economic Community of Central African States), the seat of which is in Libreville and which includes, in addition to the six countries of the CEMAC, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Angola, Sao Tome and Principe, Burundi and Rwanda.
The Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, has experienced numerous coups and mutinies since independence from France in 1960.

At this time though the other former members of French West Africa did join the French Community and in 1960 these states (except for Mali, which at this time severed all ties with France) and the once French controlled part of Togo each attained independence.
The 1957 dated coins of French West Africa include “TOGO” in the legends to point out that these coins were actually for use in Togo as well as French West Africa.

According to the commander of the French military unit based in Gabon, French air force carrier planes allocated to peacekeepers deployed in Bangui by the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) had evacuated 80 people Sunday and 150 others on Monday.
Libreville, Gabon (PANA) - At least 230 foreigners arrived here Sunday and Monday from Bangui, the Central African Republic (CAR) capital, to escape a looting spree that followed last Saturday's coup d'etat against President Ange-Felix Patasse.
They are currently sheltered in a dozen tents at the De Gaulle barracks in Libreville, where they are receiving assistance from French military personnel.

In March 1994 the six UDEAC leaders signed a treaty for the establishment of an Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), which was to promote the process of sub-regional integration within the framework of an economic union and a monetary union.
A joint AEC/Economic and Social Commission (ECOSOC) mission visited the organisation in August 1998 and found its success in mobilising resources for its programme development and implementation to be of particular interest to all the regional economic communities in Africa.
Institutions that have already been planned include a common parliament and common court of justice.
