Economic history is undertaken using both historical methods and the application of economic theory.
The term cliometrics (a reference to Clio, the Muse of history) is used to describe the application of econometric techniques to the study of economic history.

The first agriculture in Africa is believed to have begun in the heart of the Sahara Desert, but which in 5200 BC was far more moist and densely populated.
North Africa was also blessed by one of the richest agricultural regions in the world in the form of the Nile River valley.
The banana and other crops allowed for more intensive cultivation in the tropical regions of Africa, this was most notable in the Great Lakes region, and area with excellent soil, that saw many cities and states form, their populations being fed largely by bananas.

Africa's earliest evidence of written history was in Ancient Egypt, and the Egyptian calendar is still used as the standard for dating bronze age and iron age cultures throughout the region.
Interaction between Asia, Europe and North Africa during this period was significant, major effects include the spread of classical culture around the shores of the Mediterranean; the continual struggle between Rome and the Berber tribes; the introduction of Christianity throughout the region, and the cultural effects of the churches in Tunisia, Egypt and Ethiopia.
The Portuguese, whose power in Africa was already waning, were not in a position to interfere with the Dutch plans, and Britain was content to seize the island of Saint Helena as her half-way house to the East.

The dominant religion of northern Africa is Islam, which replaced Christianity in the 7th century and spread west and south across the Sahara and into the equatorial zones.
