Evidence that the economy is in conflict with the Earth's natural systems can be seen in the daily news reports of shrinking forests, eroding soils, deteriorating rangelands, expanding deserts, rising carbon dioxide levels, falling water tables, rising temperatures, more destructive storms, melting glaciers, rising sea level, dying coral reefs, collapsing fisheries, and disappearing species.
Just as recognition that the Earth is not the center of the solar system set the stage for advances in astronomy, physics, and related sciences, so will recognition that the economy isn't the center of our world create the conditions to sustain economic progress and improve the human condition.
Converting the world economy into an eco-economy, however, is a monumental undertaking, as the current gap between economists and ecologists in their perception of the world could not be wider.

The larger the economy becomes relative to the ecosystem, and the more it presses against the earth's natural limits, the more destructive this incompatibility will be.

Steady state economy - Encyclopedia of Earth
The phrase “steady state economy” originated from ecological economics, most notably the work of Herman Daly, but its roots are in classical economics, most notably the “stationary state” as touted by John Stuart Mill.
The steady state economy is often discussed in the context of economic growth and the impacts of economic growth on ecological integrity, environmental protection, and economic sustainability.
It is appropriate to use the unhyphenated phrase “steady state economy” to describe an economy of stable size because “state” (as in political state) is an adjective of “economy” (as in a state’s economy), and “steady” is an adjective of this state economy.

 Sustainability News
April 5, 2000-While we receive high marks for our ability to turn the Earth's resources to our immediate use, we are failing to protect the Earth from ecological decline, according to the 30 year ecological report card issued in the latest issue of World Watch magazine.
The report charts a disconnect between the current growth in the world's economy and the health of the Earth's failing ecology.
These shifts include the worldwide rise of citizen groups in response to corporate and government shortcomings, the potential for the Precautionary Principle to play a major role in the outcome of climate negotiations, and the worldwide spread of micropower-small-scale renewable energy that is increasingly providing off-the-grid energy in countries from the Dominican Republic to Zimbabwe.
