Karl Marx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In London Marx also dedicated himself to historical and theoretical works, the most famous of which is the multivolume Das Kapital ( Capital: A Critique of Political Economy), the first volume of which was published in 1867.
Marx understood that during such a crisis the price of labor would also fall, and eventually make possible the investment in new technologies and the growth of new sectors of the economy.
Since Marx believed that surplus value appropriated from labor is the source of profits, he concluded that the rate of profit would fall even as the economy grew.

What you, as the City of London, have achieved for financial services we, as a government, now aspire to achieve for the whole economy.
And, as you, Lord Mayor, have indicated this evening, the importance that the city attaches to integrity and the highest standards in the provision of financial services is the enduring means by which London's reputation as one of the world's leading financial centres is secured, and indeed enhanced.

That is to say, the City's revival as an international financial center in the late 1960s was not deriving from the UK regaining its previous status in the international trade and world economy as an industrial power, instead, it was purely a result of an artificial creation.
The financial services industry contribute to 28 per cent of UK gross value added in 1998 (OECD, 2000), while, at the end of 2001, it pays one-third of all UK corporation tax and is likely to rise still more as the global economy grows (The British Banker Association, 2001).
Similarly, as a leading global financial center, the output growth of UK international financial services is in line with the global level, growing at least 7 per cent a year in the last decade.

Institute of Railway Studies: Industrial research on the LMS
Although the four principal railway companies of the inter-war years were the products of an unusually high degree of governmental intervention and so cannot be taken as typical of industry, individually and collectively they were hugely important players in the British economy.
Part of the explanation lies with a perception that the railways were first and foremost a service industry, a sector of the economy not generally noted for investment in technical research.
Technical change on the railways had historically tended to be the result of insights made by engineers with extensive practical experience of the limitations of existing technologies.

Re: On the gentrification of inner London
My view on London's future is complex and depends on what happens to the economy and to the fortunes of different groups.
I think that london has become steadily more middle class over the last 40 years, but that the remnants of the traditional working class (or often the non-working class) have become increasingly concentrated in what remains of the social rented sector.
You are, however, correct that (for example) the large population of white Americans and white Europeans in London would be classified as not being ethnic minorities.

In the United Kingdom, on the other hand, where taxes are generally lower, the economy and public finances are in much better shape and although London has not adopted the single currency, it is alone among the big European countries in meeting the euro zone's strict budget rules.
While the French and German black economies are estimated to be about 6 percent of GDP, undeclared work in the United Kingdom is estimated to be a mere 2 percent.
