Norfolk Island is the main island of the island group the territory encompasses amd is located at 29°02′ S 167°57′ E.
The population of Norfolk Island was estimated in July 2003 to be 1,853, with an annual population growth rate of 0.01%.

Norfolk Island is an island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, NewZealand and Noumea, and is one of Australia's few external territories.
The Norfolk Island chief of state is Queen Elizabeth II, while the Australiangovernment, through an Administrator (currently Grant Tambling) appointed by the Governor General of Australia, administers the islands external affairs.
In 1856, the island was resettled by Pitcairn Islanders,descendants of Tahitians and the Bounty mutineers.

Norfolk Islanders may properly be required to choose between, on the one hand, maintaining their present high degree of independence but in future without the benefits of Australian citizenship and, on the other hand, accepting that the Island is part of Australia and so accepting the full range of rights and responsibilities of Australian citizenship.
