Historical events concerning the Detroit River began with the arrival of the French voyageurs, the first non-natives to navigate the river and land on Detroit's shores.
During the Civil War, the river was patrolled in case of a Confederate attack from the Canadian north.
The river flows past the American towns of Detroit, River Rouge, Ecorse, Wyandotte, Grosse Ile, Riverview, Trenton, and Gibraltar and the Canadian towns of Windsor, LaSalle and Amherstburg.

 Downriver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and the Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative are two environmental preservation and recreation projects ongoing in the region.
Northern Downriver communities near Detroit and Dearborn, Michigan (such as Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Wyandotte, River Rouge, Melvindale and Ecorse) were developed in the 1920s-1940s and are identified by brick and mortar homes (often bungalows), tree-lined streets and Works Progress Administration-designed municipal buildings.
Some Downriver communities were once known for their large number of people of Southern origin who had migrated to Michigan to work in the automotive industry during the early to mid-20th Century; indeed, traces of the Southern accent are preserved by some residents, although this influence is fading.

Some of the folks in Ecorse and River Rouge are really proud people who want their cities to be nice and neat, but are unable to do anything to help.
It's nice to know that now when our country is having such a hard time, and there is so much turmoil, that there still are people who take time out of their busy lives to donate a few hours to help someone who can use their help.
I am sure the residents of Ecorse are very thankful and very proud of their accomplishments.

Origin of name: Ecorse is the oldest of the Downriver communities.
The village, which later became Ecorse, was first called "Grand Port." It was established on a Wyandot Indian site and burial ground at the close of the War of 1812.
The eventual name, Ecorse, came from its location at the mouth of a little stream known to the French as "Riviere Aux Echorches," (Bark River) because of the amount of birch barks along the banks where Indians made their canoes and wigwams.

I can usually catch a at least a couple of eyes in the Detroit River at Ecorse even though I start fishing at around 11:00 AM and quit before dark.
Maybe I got skunked because the fish simply weren't biting around Ecorse prior to last night, rather than because they had moved somewhere else from where I ususally catch them.
Used to do a lot of handlining, both the Detroit River, Peche Island, beneath the Belle Isle bridge and in front of the Ren Cen and St. Clair River, around Marine City.

Built in 1770's, it was located at 222 River Street before being torn down in the 1890's to make way for a gas main.
