Topic: Ecoteur

  Profile of an Ecoteur
One of the Ecoteur's early friends (and perhaps a mentor) was arrested at the Litton plant that manufactured cruise missile guidance systems, and again in trying to "confront" Margaret Thatcher during a visit to Canada.
Ecoteurs have a support system of sorts, in that there are legitimate (though extreme) organizations that are prepared to provide assistance.
Ecoteurs are flexible in their methods, but there is a pattern of escalation in their attacks, beginning with simple vandalism and moving to more destructive behaviour...

Things are brought to a head when the saboteurs--or "ecoteurs" as they call themselves--launch an attack designed to drive humans off the face of Antarctica.
When the ecoteurs strike, these four and others must survive in an environment that once routinely killed the hardiest explorers of a more rugged period, and somehow contribute to a solution that will satisfy both an increasingly needy world and those who wish to prevent the rapacious destruction of the environment.
Robinson tells his story with reporter-like authority, changing perspectives from character to character as he weaves together the events they are involved in to paint a detailed picture of Antarctica's past and its hoped-for future.

 CHAPTER 7
As security is increased at rural target sites, ecoteurs switch occasionally to less secure targets previously left untouched.
Since getting rid of bike tires after each "hit" would be an expense beyond the means of all but the richest eco-warrior, we suggest that mountain bikes be used only to ride to the general vicinity of the work site.
The bikes then could be hidden and the ecoteurs would go the rest of the way on foot.

Or there may be plans to rent extra equipment in the event of serious breakdowns.
Repeated hits by ecoteurs exhaust the contingencies and cut into the eventual profit.
If it works, an ecoteur need only to walk through the woods, firing into trees with a shotgun, to cause the timber beasts endless confusion.

In 1985, Roselle and other ecoteurs assisted Dave Foreman in the production of a manual on how to "monkeywrench" and get away with it.
and other ecoteurs read his novel both as an instruction manual and an incitement to action.
The interrelation of fictional and historical actions surrounding the practice of monkeywrenching is indeed complex, with influences doubling back upon influences, and with "life" and "art" ever exchanging places.

Review of Kim Stanley Robinson's Antarctica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The climax of Antarctica demonstrates the triumph of a sane middle ground -- between the rampages of capitalism (or any of the other slogan-ideas in the sentence I quoted) and the extreme reaction of terrorism or sabotage.
Interestingly, the ecoteur character would likely classify large publishing conglomerates as firmly gripped by the madness of capitalism.
In that context, Robinson has slyly used the system to transmit ideas that advocate the end of the system.

Although they may not be very active within the political arena, their significant influence in academic circles and the media is easily translated into public sympathy for the cause.
For example Earth First!, the most famous action group of deep ecologists, has been more and more vocal, even though its former ecoteur leader Dave Foreman was arrested by the FBI for conspiring to sabotage nuclear plants.
Greenpeace is famous and popular worldwide and many of its commercials aired on the cable music network, VH-1, involved Hollywood celebrities.

Foreman -- the editor/publisher of Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching -- received a suspended sentence and probation.
Gone were the days of Foreman pedaling [sic; should be “peddling”] Ecodefense after his lectures and signing copies for wild, awakened "ecoteur" recruits (he refused to sign my copy in 2001).
Most importantly to our growing struggle, the FBI had silenced our most outspoken representative, while also demonstrating that "monkeywrencher" was just another name for "terrorist."

However, woolen garments are particularly susceptible to leaving fibers behind.
Brush, cactus, barbed wire fences, and even rough brick can snag" clothing and cause the ecoteur to leave fibers.
Although it is unlikely that investigators would find minute clothing fibers left at an outdoor monkeywrenching scene, you should nonetheless avoid unusual, exotic clothing, and should consider discarding clothing after a particularly "heavy" operation.

The defence heard MI5 had files on both Hepple and Hill,, the former because of his involvement in the BNP (ie infiltrating it) and SWP (never was -- obvious BS) and the latter because of his links to an active file (Gable, presumably).
It was also claimed MI5 had no interest in militant Greens and had passed the buck to ARNI in 1995, which begs the question what they were doing before then (back to ecoteur Tim Hepple etc) and why Shayler said the exact opposite on Newsnight.
For reasons best known to themselves, the defence team never got any of this in writing and when GA's general editor pressed OnSlow on this, he denied saying any of this stuff.

Predictably, they join forces and take on the Man.
