Ecotope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like ecosystems, ecotopes are identified using flexible criteria, in the case of ecotopes, by criteria defined within a specific ecological mapping and classification system.
Other parameters that must be considered in the classification of ecotopes include their period of stability (such as the number of years that a feature might persist), and their spatial scale (minimum mapping unit).
In ecology an ecotope has also been defined as "The species relation to the full range of environmental and biotic variables affecting it" (Whittaker et al, 1973), but the term is rarely used in this context, due to confusion with the ecological niche concept.

ecotope is the same element as in ecology, and also in economy; it derives in the end from the Greek word for household.
ECOTOPE is the environment of a community and is defined similarly as habitats by a combination of several abiotic parameters.

Ecosystem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, the term had been coined already in 1930 by Tansley's colleague Roy Clapham, who was asked if he could think of a suitable word to denote the physical and biological components of an environment as a single unit.
Tansley expanded on the term in his later work, adding the ecotope concept to define the spatial context of ecosystems (Tansley, 1939).
Modern usage of the term derives from the work done by Raymond Lindeman in his classic study of a Minnesota lake (Lindeman, 1942).

Ecotope mapping for high resolution ecological change measurement across anthropogenic landscapes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The approach is specifically designed for urban, suburban, and village landscapes and is based on the direct interpretation of high resolution (¡Ü1 m) imagery combined with groundtruthing in the field.
The anthropogenic ecotope classification and mapping system characterizes all stable land use systems employed by local land managers in rural, suburban, and urban landscapes, so that data obtained directly from land managers can be integrated with ecological measurements to make spatially-explicit high resolution ecological change estimates across landscapes.
The relative strengths and weaknesses of ecotope mapping relative to traditional land use/land cover mapping such as the NLCD system will be described, along with strategies for integrating high-resolution site-based measurements with regional data to make regional and global change estimates.

Within these, sub-quadrats of 5 by 5 m and 1 by 1 m were used to record the angiosperm species (excluding grasses, which could not be accurately identified in the field) present in the shrub and herb layers respectively.
Analysis of species composition of quadrats belonging to various ecotope types determined that ecotope types as identified by supervised classification differ significantly in their species composition.
For these 30-40 ecotope types, field sampling of various organisms, including but not restricted to plants, butterflies and birds, can be used to establish the set of species that are found associated with specific ecotope types.

Ecozone - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Correspondingly, they are distinguished by different climates, landforms, soil units, plant formations and biomes, and land use systems.
In the (hierarchical) systems of natural regions, whose basic unit is the ecotope, the term ecozone represents the highest class heading.
A few of the ecozones are subdivided into comparatively independent subregions or ecoregions, such as the Polar subpolar zone, which is divided into the glacier-covered regions (ice deserts), the frost debris regions and the tundras.

Habitats and ecotopes in the Coastal Zone: A Multitier Concept
An ECOTOPE is the environment of a community and is defined similarly as habitats by a combination of several abiotic parameters.
In such a case it might be possible to use the presence of their staple food source (made as a Habitat Map) in combination with availabity of the food (period of emersion/immersion or waterdepth) to obtain a Habitat Map.
As ecotopes can be discerned too from a management point of view, it is for instance possible to investigate what areas are sensitive to bottom trawling-fishery or oil spills in case of a disaster.

The centers train teachers to guide and supervise students in their "ecotope" projects, serve as lending centers of scientific equipment (e.g., air and noise monitors) to schools, and teach students to use scientific equipment in the field.
“Ecotope” centers have been set up in different regions of the country, mostly within the framework of municipal environmental units or associations of towns for the environment.

HABIMAP is a GIS-method developed for marine tidal waters to define ecotopes and habitats that occur there and to depict them into maps.

I chose the idea that "short chains are more stable and that long chains, if destroyed, would require the invasion of new species to maintain the integrity of the chain" for my second reaction.
