Ecotourism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ecotourism means ecological tourism, where ecological has both environmental and social connotations.
For many countries, ecotourism is not so much seen as a marginal activity intended to finance protection of the environment than as a major sector of national economy and as a means of attracting tourists.
Critics claim that ecotourism as practiced and abused often consists of placing a hotel in a splendid landscape, to the detriment of the ecosystem.

Controlling ecotourism within the limit of the carrying capacity of the environment can be accomplished via sound management techniques (park management) or the use of economic instruments such as user charges (or entrance fees), various kinds of taxes, and imposing a limit on the number of visitors or tradable permits.
Impacts of ecotourism on the environment, economy, and social and cultural communities are important to policy makers in assuring that the positive benefits are maximized while negative impacts are minimized within the carrying capacity.
Ecotourism has a high potential for expansion, as expenditures by ecotourists are generally greater than that of the average tourist.

 3. ECOTOURISM
Because most components of ecotourism definitions either focus on the goal of sustainability or on means to achieve that goal, it is practical to use the simple conceptual definition of ecotourism being sustainable nature-based tourism and recreation.
Moreover, intraregional ecotourism in particular is expected to grow as regional population centres become increasingly crowded and polluted, and as increased wealth and education lead to greater knowledge of, and interest in, the natural environment.
Ecotourism's impacts often are categorized using groups like "direct" (effect or the visitors themselves) and "indirect" (effect of the infrastructure or activities necessary to provide the visitor experience) or "on-site" and "off-site".

Ecotourism Definition - Extensive Definition & Literature Review
Considering that “ecotourism is not automatically sustainable” [Wall, 1997, p.490], it may have to be viewed as part of a longer term strategy of sustainable development in which tourism is later phased out [Prosser, 1994].
Ecotourism is often found in designated protected areas or national parks which may have been imposed upon the indigenous population and if they can see no benefit from it's existence, they may have little incentive to adhere to the environmental regulations of the “common pool” resource [Hardin, 1968; Healy, 1994; see also Bird, 1997].
According to Wallace and Pierce [1996], ecotourism is a type of tourism that “maximizes the early and long-term participation of local people in the decision making process that determines the kind and amount of tourism that should occur” [p.850].

 Ecotourism Definition
After much discussion it was agreed (not unanimously, I must add) that the most appropriate thing was to accept a universal definition of ecotourism as an international framework (in order to understand what we are talking about), and that the official IUCN definition (which is my own) should be accepted.
"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations (Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".
In countries where poor rural communities rely on natural areas to maintain a subsistence life style, the contribution to conservation may be measured by the degree to which the impact of local communities is reduced.
