Topic: Ecotypes

Abstracts of recent papers on ecospecies differentiation
It is considered that the existence of two distinct, sympatric ecotypes is unlikely, and that there is a true barnacle-dwelling ecotype of L. saxatilis that is morphologically and biochemically distinct from L. neglecta.
One possible response of plant populations to heterogeneous environments is genetic adaptation resulting in the formation of distinct ecotypes.
In all, seven different habitat-genotype combinations (ecotypes) were distinguishable on the basis of their morphological-allozyme-rDNA genotypes.

Utilizing The Ecotype Concept - Roadside Use of Native Plants - Environment - FHWA
Ecotypes are plants in the early stages of varietal development, but lack the refinement in plant characters which come with breeding to fix the desired characters.
Ecotypes were first recognized in the early 1920's by scientists studying taxonomy, morphology, ecology, and physiology.
Ecotypes of little bluestem growing on either sandy or clay soils do not grow well on soils of the opposite texture.

The cohesive force within an ecotype is not genetic exchange, owing to its rarity in bacteria, but rather “periodic selection.” Each adaptive mutant can cause a sweep of an ecotype’s diversity—a periodic selection event setting the genome-wide diversity to nearly zero.
Because ecotypes differ in their ecological niches, the periodic selection from one ecotype cannot affect the diversity in other ecotypes, and thus different ecotypes may diverge indefinitely.
We have recently developed an “ecotype simulation” approach to determine the sequence clusters that correspond to bacterial ecotypes.

PG-IV: P68 - Genetic Diversity Among Arabidopsis thaliana Ecotypes
The term "ecotypes" refers to a population that has maintained its identity through isolation or selection in a specific environment.
For each ecotype, genomic DNA of at least ten individual plants was primarily analyzed by AFLP using 11 primer combinations.
In a subsequent step, the different ecotypes were also analyzed with SSLP primers and the obtained results were compared with the AFLP data.

Phenotypic characterization of some indigenous chicken ecotypes of Ethiopia
More phenotypic and genetic information that involves all traits and all ecotypes of the country together with the role of the traits and the underlying genes on socio-economic factors should be assessed to fully characterize them in order to use in promotion of their utilization, conservation of genetic variability and preservation of further adulteration.
Between the three ecotypes the red, fl and reddish gray plumage coloration was distributed relatively fairly whereas the distribution of the rest plumage color varied between the three ecotypes.
It is therefore more appropriate and meaningful to describe the indigenous domestic chicken ecotypes based not only on their geographical origin, but also using and stratifying ecotypes by observable physical parameters such as size of the adult bird, shape of the comb or the plumage characteristics within specific ecotype.

 Ecotype Summary
The ecotype concept integrates the type concept of systematists, who group organisms that are most similar to the type specimen (the "ideal" representative of the species) with the realization that within-species variation has important ecological significance.
The demonstration of ecotypes and clines was very important to the confirmation of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection and continues to provide insight into the mechanisms of evolution of biological variation.
Ecotypes have been surrounded in controversy during the recent past because there is a push in many circles to retain as many populations of ecotypes as possible.

An ecotype is a distinct entity of an animal, plant, or other organism that is closely linked (in its characteristics) to the ecological surroundings it inhabits.
For example it is commonly accepted that the Tucuxi dolphin has two ecotypes - the riverine ecotype found in some South American rivers and the pelagic ecotype found in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The term ecotype was coined in 1922 by Swedish botanist Gote Turesson.

Ecotype E3 (Mandri Wala Toba), showing vivid differences from all other ecotypes was at the top in all the characteristics responsible for biomass increase, i.e.
The differences among the ecotypes were observed, in stamen colour, inflorescence colour and habit of the plant.
Ecotype HI was the distinct having violet coloured stamens, violet green inflorescence and erect plants.

Ecotype knowledge will be useful for geneticists, taxonomists, the evolutionary sciences and ecological restoration practitioners; and will be critical for discussing biodiversity and conservation.
Ecotype taxonomy would be useful for the ecologist and ecological restorationist to discuss the variations they have encountered and are working with.
Ecotype knowledge will be as startling and useful to us, as the knowledge of antibiotics was useful for the practice of modern medicine.
