Ecthelion was an Elf-lord of Gondolin, leader of the People of the Fountain.
Previously, Ecthelion had slain three Balrogs, but he had lost the use of his shield arm in the process, and was carried in a swoon to safety by Tuor.
Gothmog's fire was thus quenched, but Ecthelion also drowned with him.

Ecthelion of the Fountain, captain of Gondolin and warden of the great gate at the end of the climbing road, the hidden entrance to Gondolin.
Ecthelion, whose face was of the pallor of grey steel and whose shield-arm hung limp at his side, strode above him as he fell; and that Gnome drave at the demon, yet did not give him his death, getting rather a wound to his sword-arm that his weapon left his grasp.
It should be noted that it should be Fountains instead of the singular Fountain as per "Of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin" in Unfinished Tales.

Encyclopedia of Arda: Ecthelion of the Fountain
A lord of Gondolin, famed as the slayer of Gothmog Lord of Balrogs in the Fall of that city.
Both derive the name from the Elvish ecthel, but in one case (in volume 2) that word is interpreted 'fountain', whereas in the other (in volume 5) it is defined as 'spear-point', with a quite different etymology.
It seems certain that 'fountain' was the earlier interpretation, and given that Ecthelion is consistently referred to as 'Ecthelion of the Fountain', it hardly seems plausible that the original definition simply slipped Tolkien's mind.

However, I think that the last part is a touch to show opposites: Ecthelion, after a terrible, burning fight, died in the cool waters.
I think this would imply that the Ecthelion continued fighting the Balrog, killing him, and then laden down by this armor perished in the fountain.
I agree with Nenya, in that it means that Ecthelion 'perished in cool water' after fighting in a 'fiery battle' in the Court.

There had been little the past few days Glorfindel and Ecthelion had been allowed to do but rest, for the people of their houses insisted on such and their chief advisors had promptly taken over their duties.
