Ectoprocta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ectoprocta are a phylum of lophophorate animals.
Generally, the members of the ectoprocta phylum are colonial aquatic animals (also known as moss animals).
The Ectoprocta are one of the few classical phyla from which no members have been found in the Cambrian.

POLYZOA - LoveToKnow Article on POLYZOA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In the majority of Ectoprocta there is no stolon, the zooids growing out of one another and being usually apposed so as to form continuous sheets or branches.
The zoarium may rise up into erect growths composed of a single layer of zoojds, the orifices of which are all on one surface, or of two layers of zooids placed back to back, with the orifices on both sides of the fronds or plates.
The development of the Ectoprocta is intelligible on the hypothesis that the Entoprocta form the starting-point of the series.

Ectoprocta is classified by itself because, according to Margulis and Schwartz (1998), there is a disappearance of the larval stage during metamorphosis, therefore, it can not be completely certain that the Ectoprocta has a true coelom.
A main difference in comparing the two Phyla was that Ectoprocta have an anus on the lophophore and it is not considered to be true because it does surround both the mouth and the anus (Pennack,1953; Margulis and Schwartz, 1998).
As shown in the cladogram, Ectoprocta has fewer derived characteristics from the common ancestor and this is due to the uncertainty of whether or not they have a pseudo or true coelom.

Holt (2000) states that the main difference between the Entoprocta and Ectoprocta lies in the loss of the mesentaries in the coelomic cavity.
The Entoprocts have spiral cleavage and the Ectoprocts divide by radial cleavage (Meglitsch and Schram, 1991).
The Ectoprocta also have a mouth in the center and an anus outside of the lophophore, a condition opposite from the Entoprocta (Holt, 2000).

Bryozoans, traditional phylum name Bryozoa, new phylum name Ectoprocta, are often commonly known as moss animals.
These animals are rapid colonziers and colourful additions to reef habitats, forming calcareous encrustations to continental shelf frameworks and inshore rocks.
The marine representatives, one of the most poorly known groups of marine invertebrates, can be found in great abundance and diversity in the correct environmental conditions.

 Bryozoans by Ronald L. Shimek, Ph.D. - Reefkeeping.com
Bryozoans are often overlooked by casual observers, such as beachcombers or amateur naturalists, and probably because of this, I don't know of any of them that has a useful common name.
The group is known taxonomically as the Phylum Bryozoa or the Phylum Ectoprocta.
I prefer to use Bryozoa when referring to the group, but that is simply a matter of personal choice to avoid the term Ectoprocta, which is similar to the name of another phylum called the Entoprocta.

The structure and function of the cilia suggest a phylogenetic position in Protostomia, while some aspects of inner budding and brooding of larvae are similar to those of Entoprocta and Ectoprocta.
The dispersive larva possesses a mesodermal supporting chordoid structure, otherwise absent in protostomian larvae.
We believe that all the above features of this previously undescribed species warrant the recognition of a new phylum with affinities to Ectoprocta and Entoprocta.

The freshwater lophophorate species do not form a monophyletic unit, but comprise two separate phyla, the Ectoprocta (Bryozoa) and the Entoprocta (Entoprocta).
Resemblance with the Ectoprocta is only superficial, while entoprocts may also be mistaken for hydroids.
Within the Entoprocta, the anus is situated on the circular lophophore (originally the ventral surface of the free-living larva), and a simple protonephridial system is present.

Bryozoans are small marine and freshwater animals which comprise the Phylum Ectoprocta.
Of the three classes of ectoprocta bryozoans, by far the best known is Gymnolaemata, with several thousand species, mostly marine, many documented in an extensive fossil record.
In contrast, the Phylactolaemata has only about seventy named species, all extant and found exclusively in fresh water.
