The Orthodox in the Ecumenical Movement:
It should be stressed, however, that although the term "Ecumenical Movement" was used for the first time in the 1920's in order to define this encouraging development in inter-church relations, the idea of ecumenism per se, is not a recent development in the life of the Church.
It was frequently remarked that modern ecumenism emerged from within the Protestant world, as the outcome of its internal situation and in an endeavour to seek solutions to the existing problems confronting the Churches of the Reformation in their daily life and witness.
Hence, consistent with the decades-old ecumenical policy of their Churches, the Orthodox delegates reiterated in the afore- mentioned document the unflagging Orthodox position that the main aim of the WCC should be the restoration of Christian unity, understood as full ecclesial unity in doctrinal teaching, sacramental life and polity.

Ecumenical Movement: the process toward a greater expression of unity and cooperation among all Christians.
It was an ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic Church in that it was constituted by the hierarchy from all parts of the world, but observers from other Churches were invited to attend, giving it also a character to some degree ecumenical in the interconfessional sense, though only Catholics were full participants.
The ecumenical movement has been expressed also in a number of denominational mergers, including the United Church of Canada (1925), the Church of South India (1947), and in the U.S. the United Church of Christ (1957) and the United Methodist Church (1968).

The Orthodox Church and the Ecumenical Movement
The Ecumenical Movement has its roots in the frustration of European Christians who were fed up with their history of nationalistic goals and wars which were all too often fought in the name of God.
The resultant Ecumenical Movement is predominantly a Protestant fabrication, since neither the Roman Catholic nor the Orthodox Churches could ever have recognized their breakaway ecclesiological entities as having remained faithful to the original dogmas and teachings.
This is probably a fair description, because the Protestant-led Ecumenical Movement is an eclectic blending of disparate denominations and confessions, most of which express—indeed embrace—one form or another of the heresies combated historically by the Orthodox Church through its Ecumenical Councils.

In addition, many Evangelical and Charismatic Christians view ecumenism as a sign of end times apostasy before Jesus Christ's return as prophesied in the Bible, and see substantial similarities between the doctrinal stance of end-times false teachers, as described in 2 Peter 2:1-2, and the theological pronouncements of certain leaders of ecumenical movements.
In fact, opposition to ecumenism is closely associated with antagonism, in the case of Traditionalist Catholics, to abandonment of Latin in the celebration of Mass, and, in the case of Greek Old Calendarists (who speak of "the arch-heresy of ecumenism"), to abandonment of the Julian calendar.

Ecumenism is the desire of some within a few Christian denominations to achieve some sort of instituitional 'oneness'.
The ecumenical movement seeks to cast aside centuries of decisions made by imperfect but God-fearing men and women in order to achieve a 'oneness' which would be purely cosmetic, that is, a oneness which would be 'for appearances only'.
It is also interesting how ecumenical types mostly just represent the two or three largest denominations and seek greater influence, power and control for their own group by negotiation.
