Edward Mayhoff 'Ed' Grimley was a character introduced on the television series SCTV and later used in Saturday Night Live.
After achieving popularity on SNL, Grimley became a cartoon character on Hanna-Barbera's animated show The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley (1988).
In each episode, Grimley would have an adventure of some sort, interspersed with science lessons from The Amazing Gustav Brothers, named Roger and Emil, and a 'scary story' presented as a show-within-a-show by Grimley's favourite television host, Count Floyd.

This game is based on comedian Martin Short's famous Ed Grimley character originally featured on Canada's SCTV comedy show and later cast on Saturday Night Live in the US.
In 1988-89, Short's Ed Grimley was the title charactor in a Saturday morning show called 'The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley.' (In case you don't remember him by name, Ed is Martin's character with the large, pointed hair spike).

The dichotomy between SCTV and SNL Ed Grimley sketches is akin to one of my favorite analogies to support my contention that opinion goes only so far and sometimes one piece of work is just better then the other: the difference between Beethoven and a monkey banging a tambourine.
Short's characters were brilliant; look at Troy Sorensen, Cheaplaffs, Jackie Rogers Jr., Ed Grimley (before SNL ruined it), plus his takeoffs on Jerry Lewis, David Steinberg and Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (this one was so spot on it was scary).

Short-Lived Shows: The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley - TV Squad
Before that, however, there was The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, based on the spastic, stiff-haired character created by Martin Short.
The surreal world Short created around Grimley was given a more vibrant life when animated, and other touches such as a singing pet mouse gave the show an oddball quality that would portend the absurd humor of Adult Swim and other recent animated fare.
The show featured Short as the voice of Ed, as well as many of his friends from SCTV such as Joe Flaherty (who played children's show host Count Floyd in a live-action segment) and Catherine O'Hara.

It's too bad the majority of the public wants safe pablum to swallow like so much warm mush which they just dribble all over themselves.
The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley was one of those shows that, rather than being warm bland tasteless mush, had some real kick, zing, and bite.

Inside Bay Area - Craving a Glick fix? Head for 'Fame' or 'Lalawood'
I FIRST FELL for the comedy stylings of Martin Short when I saw him do Ed Grimley on "SCTV" and then later on "Saturday Night Live." I must say that with his pants pulled up way too high and his Alfalfa-like cowlick vertical on his head, Ed looked as nerdy as I felt.
Almost unrecognizable in his fat suit, Short actually fooled some celebs on the red carpet into thinking they were talking to the world's most inept TV interviewer.
