Muskie, Sen. Hubert Humphrey's vice presidential running mate in 1968, was widely considered a shoo-in for the Democratic Party nomination when he himself ran for the nation's highest office in 1972.
Muskie was born in Rumford, Maine, the son of an immigrant Polish tailor.
Muskie pioneered environmental protection laws, as chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Environmental Pollution, and championed a responsible federal budget as chair of the Senate Budget Committee.

In defending his wife, Muskie brokedown three times in as many minutes-- uttering a few words and then standing silent in the near blizzard, rubbing at his face, his shoulders heaving, while he attempted to regaim his composure sufficiently to speak.
Muskie beat McGovern by a margin of 46 to 37 percent, but his managers had publicized their goal of winning at least 50 percent of the New Hampshire Democratic vote.

It was noted, among other things, that he had developed a tendency to roll his eyes wildly during TV interviews, that his thought patterns had become strangely fragmented, and that not even his closest advisors could predict when he might suddenly spiral off into babbling rages, or neocomatose funks.
It is entirely conceivable -- given the known effects of Ibogaine -- that Muskie's brain was almost paralyzed by hallucinations at the time; that he looked out at that crowd and saw gila monsters instead of people, and that his mind snapped completely when he felt something large and apparently vicious clawing at his legs.

"Never in a million years would I have imagined Ed becoming a U.S. senator," recalled the Cornell trustee emeritus, a former Xerox chairman who served as President Jimmy Carter's ambassador- at-large and President Lyndon B. Johnson's ambassador and U.S. representative to the Organization of American States.
But he lost the bid (to Sen. George McGovern) following a widely publicized incident in which he bitterly (many said tearfully) denounced the editor of the Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader for a series of disparaging editorials about him and his wife, Jane.
In 1981 he joined the New York-based law firm of Chadbourne & Parke, where he was a senior partner at the time of his death.
