Oates, Joyce Carol. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Oates writes about contemporary American life, which she sees as often defined by violence.
Although some of her novels have been labeled gothic, the violence in them is neither mysterious nor necessarily dramatic; it occurs randomly as in everyday life.
Oates also has published thrillers under the name Rosamond Smith, plus poems, plays, children’s fiction, essays, literary criticism, and a book on boxing (1988).

 Indian Point Energy Center
Before the trade center attack, Con Ed had estimated that its peak load, or highest level of use — based on past use, the economy, changes and growth — would be 12,175 megawatts this summer.
Most experts expected Con Ed to lower those estimates after the attack, in part because the trade center demand was gone and also because of the slowing economy.
Con Ed officials say they believe brownouts are likely for the summer and that the area could be in for a major flout if there is any significant equipment failure.

 JOYCE CAROL OATES : PAPERS
Joyce Carol Oates herself says that she does not feel exceedingly productive, that she is no workaholic, also because she loves her work so much that she cannot consider it 'work' at all, but her life's commitment.
Joyce Carol Oates deliberately 'taps' a frame of reference in the reader's mind that has been shaped by newspaper articles, TV reports and personal histories long ago; and, linking up Quinn with this schema, she does not need to be any more explicit in her description of him.
This is an application of H.G. Widdowson's distinction of the 'symbol' as a unit of semantic meaning with a specifiable sense and denotation; and of the 'index' as a unit of pragmatic meaning used for the act or reference.
