Stelmach was the first minister to resign from Cabinet in accordance with Premier Klein's order that all prospective leadership candidates resign from Cabinet by June 2006[2].
Stelmach was first elected to the legislature in the 1993 provincial election.
Stelmach's grandfather, Nicholas, arrived in Alberta from the western Ukrainian district of Radekhiv with his wife, Theodora Kuchera, and settled on the homestead south of Andrew, Alberta in 1898.

We also saw Ed Stelmach ride from third place on the first ballot of the Alberta PC leadership race to overwhelm both frontrunners Jim Dinning and Ted Morton on the third ballot.
It was Ted Morton's supporters who pushed Ed Stelmach over the top on the third ballot (to the effect of 28000 for Ed Stelmach to 4000 for Jim Dinning).
Ed Stelmach's policy positions on this campaign were not exactly the most well developed.

Ed Stelmach is "steady", he is loyal, he is honest, or so it goes.
Stelmach, who had begun as a distant third from the week before, won a majority on the first tally, even before the preferential ballots of the third place candidate Ted Morton were counted.
Stelmach, he takes over a party in a province with all the potential in the world and it will be interesting (dare I say exciting) to see how he balances his image (moderate) with his real policies (NOT moderate).

Ed Stelmach did get it right when he said that he would look into improving the efficiencies of hospitals because simple things like starting work on time has significantly reduced wait times in some provinces as rediculous as that sounds.
But it remains to be seen how running a parallel system will provide us with more doctors according to the premise of their argument.

I'd love to say that I was a visionary of some sorts and suported Stelmach from the start, but traditionally I wait for a horse to pull the bandwagon, because a horse has legs and before the first vote it looked like Stelmach's campaign didn't have any.
I'm nor ruling out that all the people that voted for Ed are really old and thought that they were voting for Ted.
Hats off to Stelmach for running that image for the campaign (and over the last year quietly), he was convinced many that he is moderate and the "Nice guy" (which I don't dount)...

Last week I predicted Ed Stelmach would be the next premier of Alberta and I have to admit I did take a little ribbing from some readers.
Stelmach finished with 77,577 votes, Dinning 55,509 and Morton a distant third with 41,243.
Stelmach proved on Saturday he is that man and he will be sworn in as premier on Dec. 15.

If Premier Ed Stelmach manages to keep the Benedictines, Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans, and Carmelites at bay, he may actually be able to keep Alberta's fuses in good repair.
Ed is a man who has lived through the same times as the farmers/ranchers in the Cypress Hills have; those people are smart, tough, and very intelligent - they have to be to survive.
Stelmach's grandparents settled in what was then the Northwest Territories in 1898 (remember Alberta was not even a province until 1905) and the Ukrainian immigrant made up a large percentage of norther Alberta's population at that time.

Since Stelmach's support is largely rural AND conservative I hope they realize that Morton best represents them and is the only one who has a chance at sending Dinning back to his liberal home.
Ed Stelmach represents all that is good about all of Alberta and all Albertans -- rural and urban; newcomers to Wild Rose Country and those descendants of our proud pioneer heritage; those enjoying the benefits of the Alberta Advantage and those still struggling to take their place.
For many voters, their decision is not based on dissection of policy minutae, but on character; Stelmach comes across not as a professional politician/used-car salesman like Dinning, but rather as a really decent, honest fellow, and archetypal Albertan of a certain generation.
