Ed Thigpen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edmund Leonard (Ed) Thigpen (born December 28, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American jazz drummer.
Ed's first job with a major orchestra was with Cootie Williams in 1951 and 1952.
After working with Dinah Washington, Lennie Tristano, Johnny Hodges, Bud Powell, and Billy Taylor, he replaced guitarist Herb Ellis in the Oscar Peterson Trio in 1959 (Peterson's original Trio, modelled on Nat King Cole's, consisted of piano, guitar, and bass).

Ed Thigpen, now 73, lives in Denmark, from which jazz pool he drew some of the most accomplished players in the land in Jens Winther (trumpet), Thomas Franck (tenor saxophone), Kasper Villaume (piano), and Jesper Bodilsen (bass).
Thigpen’s “Denise,” further highlighting his masterful drumming, reminds a bit of a Blakey arrangement in its voicing.
Thigpen’s propulsive work on the bop-ish “Reets and I,” sets a pace for Villaume’s impressive piano, followed in turn by the horns trading 8s with the drummer.

The rhythm section of Lindberg and drummer Ed Thigpen also pushes Douglas to soar on “Fortune on a Sphere.” About a third of the way through that piece, Lindberg suddenly shifts the mood by switching from a dark arco to more beat-laden pizzicato while Thigpen responds with a brush-and-cymbal combination.
Add the fact that Thigpen is rarely heard in a non-mainstream context and this CD becomes one of the jazz treats of the year.
Ed Thigpen is the personification of what Mary Lou Williams, Steve Lacy and others have tried to teach us: that good music is good music, regardless of the technique used to make it, or the label the industry puts on it.

Thigpen says that even though you're not playing loud, a drummer still has to be able to play with intensity.
Ed brought a subtlety to the group in volume, but he had all that intensity in the beat.
Early in Thigpen's career, an important element in the swing feel was maintaining a steady pulse on the bass drum, and he became a master at "feathering" the bass drum in a trio setting.

Like any good host, Thigpen makes his guest feel right at home, and Lovano seems more an integral part of the trio than an appendage grafted on for “name appeal.” In other words, he makes Rhythm Features a quartet, one that sounds as if it had been working together for a long time.
He and Dahl (a consistently resourceful improviser who’s one of Thigpen’s former students, a drummer before he switched to piano) share much of the solo space with Thigpen adding discursive statements only on “Sweet Mama” and “Freak,” Bodilsen on “Like Blues.” The audience at Copenhagen’s Jazz House loved the concert, and so should you.
