U.S. Congressional District 10 — Taking On Ed Towns (Gotham Gazette. May 1, 2006)
U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns, who has represented the 10th district in Brooklyn since 1982, has not had it so easy.
Towns also hasn’t offered a clear answer to why he voted for the trade agreement, but his legislative aide, Rick Blake, defended the vote as “principled” and said the congressman has supported labor issues more than 90 percent of the time.
Towns, who sits on the Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said he stands on his record (see his Web site) although in an interview he did not specify exactly what he has accomplished.

Irregular Times Rating and Contact Information for Representative Edolphus Towns of NY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
Towns has taken the principled step of formally lending support to H.R., which would put an end to the practice of "extraordinary rendition." This is a practice in which Bush Administration officials send people into the custody of certain nations, knowing full well (some would say intending) that they will be tortured there.
Towns has not yet cosponsored H.R., which would provide more information to the public about contacts between lobbyists and politicians, and which would slow down the revolving door of politics in which politicians move into cushy corporate jobs after they retire in exchange for favors.
Edolphus Towns has not yet cosponsored H.R., which would keep members of the Federal Communication Commission from using their appointed positions to censor cable, satellite or internet programs they consider to be indecent.

New towns in Northern Ireland were designed to have development commissions, established and governed under a separate act (1965).
New towns were also designated to stimulate economic growth (Craigavon), to provide needed housing and community services for industrial areas (Corby, Glenrothes, CwmbrAn), or to decentralize population through the expansion of already large towns (Peterborough, Northampton, and Ipswich).

One source speculated that Towns may be raising the possibility of a run to sway the county toward anointing him as his father's successor.

 The History of British Towns
Roman towns were laid out on a grid plan and in the 4th century AD many gained defences.
As the Vikings threatened, Saxon kings were driven to resurrect ruined Roman towns as walled market towns, which would generate income for their own defence (see Alfred's work on Bath and the Charter of Worcester).
He laid out a series of towns between 1277 and 1296 beside his new castles in north Wales, such as Caernarvon and Conway.

publish.nyc.indymedia.org | Rep. Towns Must Be Held Accountable for DR-CAFTA Sellout
Ed Towns signing of The US-Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement, contradicted his vehement earlier opposition to the agreement and compromised the interests of workers, small farmers, healthcare recipients, and the environment.
It was DR-CAFTA's predecessor NAFTA that drove a 100% increase in undocumented immigration.
Towns would do well to explore his own complicity in exacerbating this trend, instead of labelling people who are forced to emigrate as a matter of necessity by ruthless pro-corporate economic policies as “illegal immigrants.”

This requires a conceptualisation of the structure of the community at the point of its inception - the eleventh and twelfth century - when, in terms of its topographical, jurisdictional and functional identity, its emergent form can be compared with pre-existing forms and its enduring characteristics can be established.
Accordingly it is advisable that you should familiarise yourself (according to your own particular interest) with the history of some of the towns listed in the appendix of this handout, as well as undertaking specific tutorial reading listed below, the most important items of which are marked with an asterisk.
Most of these studies are concerned with the topographical structure of the built-up area and totally neglect the important aspect of the town fields and their role in urban provisioning, upon which some light is thrown by the map in *J H Williams 1982c relating to NORTHAMPTON in the appendix.
