Vaizey is the son of the late Lord Vaizey, a life peer, and his wife Marina Vaizey, a well-known art historian.
Vaizey is also a regular broadcaster, appearing on Fi Glover's and Edwina Currie's shows on BBC Radio Five Live, as a regular panellist on five’s The Wright Stuff and BBC Radio 4's Despatch Box, and occasionally as a presenter of People and Politics on the BBC World Service.
Vaizey first stood for Parliament at the 1997 UK general election, when he was the candidate for Bristol East.

Mr Vaizey was wearing fl, slip-on shoes, blue jeans, a fl zip-up jacket from Gap, fl V-neck jersey, casual shirt and no tie: hardly the dress of a traditional Conservative.
Mr Vaizey had a spot of bother when his campaign bus, actually it was a Vauxhall Zafira stuffed with blue balloons, was being manoeuvred out of a parking space near King Alfred's statue.

Wantage MP Ed Vaizey visited the Chemistry Research Laboratory on Friday 20 January as part of a nationwide scheme which pairs academics with Members of Parliament.
During his visit to Oxford’s Chemistry Research Laboratory Mr Vaizey was shown the facilities used for preparing surfaces for experiments conducted at ISIS, the world’s leading pulsed neutron and muon source based at CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
He was also given a tour of the state-of-the-art building and learnt more about the research conducted at the largest Chemistry department in the Western world.

While the UK is reverting to one of the world's oldest diagnostic tests, the US has issued new TB detection guidelines, advising that a simple, one-step blood test, can be used in all circumstances under which the traditional tuberculin skin test is currently used.
Ed Vaizey, Conservative MP for Wantage, the constituency in which Oxford Immunotec are based says, 'Over a year ago the Department of Health announced their TB Action Plan, which set out new measures to tackle and ultimately eliminate tuberculosis in England, stating that accurate diagnosis through the use of modern laboratory techniques, is essential.
However, by bringing back the Mantoux skin test they are essentially acting directly against the claims they make in their own Plan.
