It was in the early 1780s that Benjamin Vulliamy (1747-1811), King's Clockmaker and junior partner in the family firm, began to develop a range of ornamental clocks to challenge the dominance of French pieces in Society drawing rooms.
Surviving correspondence between Vulliamy and the Derby factory shows the serious technical problems which the factory faced in producing figures of the precise size, colour and quality demanded by Vulliamy.
Vulliamy's first designs for clocks with Derby biscuit figures were relatively simple, but by the mid-1780s he had developed some larger compositions using three biscuit figures (two large and one small).

Ed Vulliamy's testimony ended with the February 1994 Washington cease-fire agreement between Croats and Muslims.
Since a number of cease-fires signed in the past had been breached, Vulliamy and his colleagues were sceptical, but the HVO spokesman in Mostar persuaded them that this time the "cease-fire will be imposed and observed." That was precisely how it was: the war stopped all of a sudden.

Vulliamy's remarks were centered on the dilemmas that he has faced in his reporting career, and more specifically how his decision to not remain neutral in the face of horrendous criminality related to his profession.
Vulliamy was faced with exactly that situation when he 'stumbled' into the Bosnian death camps "just down the road from Venice, eyeball to eyeball with the inmates that the politicians and the diplomats already know about but have deemed to be 'okay' and to be neutral about…"
In the end, Vulliamy's remarks, he said, were meant as introductory and did not pretend to enunciate conclusions; rather, he wanted to raise a set of ethical questions that are likely to face journalists more and more often and that should be discussed.
