Edale is a small village in the Derbyshire Peak District, England.
Historically, Edale was the name of the valley of the River Noe.
There is a youth hostel in the village to cater for the steady stream of walkers, as the Edale area is excellent walking country, the village being almost surrounded by the plateau of Kinder Scout and the hills of Lose Hill, Hollins Cross and Mam Tor.

Edale is a valley in North Derbyshire, situated about 15 miles west of Sheffield, in the heart of the Peak District National Park.
The valley is a loose collection of scattered farmsteads or 'booths' as they are known which grew up around the original shelters or 'boothies' used by shepards when tending their sheep on the hillsides.
Edale Mill, formerly a cotton mill was built in 1792 and now provides holiday accommodation.

This walk starts from the main car park in Edale (grid ref 124853) and for once there is a viable public transport option with Edale station served by trains on the Manchester and Stockport to Sheffield route.
Parking in Edale can be a problem especially at weekends and in fine weather so an early start is probably a good idea.
From here back to Edale you follow the current route of the Pennine Way and as expected it is well maintained and easy walking.

Edale is at the start of the Pennine Way footpath, 268 miles long, which extends from here, through Yorkshire, and ends just over the Scottish border.
The obvious track is an old medieval packhorse way and where the track disappears off the very bottom edge of the picture a small part of the sidewalls of the old packhorse bridge is just visible.
This path starts in Edale and is part of the Pennine Way which goes across Kinder Scout; a vast moorland plateau just over 2000 feet high.

Back at Hollins Cross you take the falling northwestern path off the ridge to descend to Edale where you fetch up opposite the church, halfway between the railway halt and the official start of the Pennine Way.
Seven paths meet at the 400m col of Hollins Cross; the ridge paths running east and west, paths down the south slope to Mam farm and Castleton, and paths down the north slope to Blacktor Farm, Greenlands Farm, and Edale via Hollins Farm.
Four hundred yards to your left, conversely, is Edale's railway halt with regular services to Sheffield (about 40 minutes away) and Manchester (about 50 minutes), or New Mills for more local bus connections.
