Ecology: Edaphic Factors And The Landscape-Scale Distributions Of Tropical Rain Forest Trees
For a variety of reasons, including issues relating to sample size and adequate edaphic characterization of landscapes, we suggest that the -30% of species shown to be edaphically biased in this study is an underestimate of the true degree of edaphically related distributional biases.
If edaphic distributional biases are shown to be common, this suggests that edaphically linked processes leading to differential recruitment are similarly common.
We found that edaphically biased distributions were common.

Inconsistency of results may indicate that other factors may predominate over those analyzed, such as, the ability to tolerate shade or sunlight, density-dependent susceptibility to herbivores or pathogens, pollinators or seed dispersers, physical disturbance, etc. The understanding of species distribution is a first step towards a further development in population, community and ecosystem ecology.

 fairy rings and turfgrass damage
Edaphic fairy rings are produced by fungi that primarily colonize the soil, while lectophilic fairy rings are produced by fungi that primarily colonize the thatch and leaf litter.
Edaphic fairy rings are more common on lawns and pastures, while lectophilic fairy rings are more likely to develop on golf course putting greens and other closely mowed, high-maintenance turf.
Any decision regarding a fairy ring control strategy depends on whether the fungus is edaphic (soil-inhabiting) or lectophilic (thatch-inhabiting), the level of turf maintenance (lawn, park, putting green or fairway) and the degree to which the symptoms (Type I, II or III) are expressed.

Excluded taxa are those that lack the ability to become established on a particular soil due to mineral deficiencies or toxicities and/or peculiar physical properties.
Edaphic endemism, on the other hand, is the result of specific physiologic requirements of a taxon being met by a particular geologic formation (Kruckeberg 1984).

Although these ideas are generally recognized by most ecologists, current ecological studies often lack the underpinnings of a clear understanding of the important scales of spatial variation within study sites.
In the wet tropics a growing number of studies at small-to-large scales within old-growth forest have demonstrated strong effects of edaphic heterogeneity on floristic composition (Ashton 1969, Newbery and Proctor 1984 and cited references, Lescure and Boulet 1985, Lieberman et al.

Edaphic constraints to perennial grasses: change the plant to suit the soil or vice versa?
Abstract This paper outlines the main edaphic constraints to the growth of perennial grasses that are likely to be encountered in temperate Australia.
It is argued that soil management is often the appropriate means of minimising constraints such as nutrient deficiencies.

In percentage terms the reduction in forest area over the last 20 years has been about 0.5 percent per year which is one-half the 1.0 percent per year average of countries of the sub-region during the same period.
Changes in forest cover that have occurred over the last 20 years are shown in Table 1.2 by forest type.
Some forest types, such as the edaphic, are in particular danger.

 Tropical Savannas
Tropical savannas or grasslands are associated with the tropical wet and dry climate type (Koeppen's Aw), but they are not generally considered to be a climatic climax.
Instead, savannas develop in regions where the climax community should be some form of seasonal forest or woodland, but edaphic conditions or disturbances prevent the establishment of those species of trees associated with the climax community.
Seasonal forests of the tropics are also widespread and vary along a latitudinal/moisture gradient between the tropical broadleaf evergreen forest of the equatorial zone and the deserts of the subtropics.

A New High-Resolution National Map of Multivariate Vegetation Ecoregions
A parallel supercomputer was used to divide the conterminous 48 states of the United States into 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, and 7000 ecoregions with relatively homogeneous values of elevation, edaphic, and climatic variables using an iterative multivariate clustering technique.
The resultant national maps objectively capture the ecological patterns of spatial variance in physical, edaphic, and climatic factors relevant for the distribution and growth of plants and animals.
Assignment of red, green, and blue colors according to the principal component scores associated with the ranges of the nine variables defining each cluster results in a map where the ecological similarity of adjacent cluster regions is readily apparent.

In dry tropical forests, light and soil moisture are thought to act in tandem to regulate seed germination, seedling establishment and survival (Ray and Brown 1995; Gerhardt 1996).
Further, abrupt discontinuities in edaphic conditions are known to occur in tropical landscapes, influencing local environmental conditions.
However, there exists little information on the effects of edaphic and topographic factors on plant species’ distributions where the gradient is less extreme.

Biological diversity is on the agenda in several connections, but little has been done in Norway on the diversity of invertebrates in cultivated fields.
In the development of organic agriculture and in adaptations for sustainable use of biological diversity, a knowledge base must be developed on the epigeic and edaphic invertebrate fauna in Norway.
The goal of a future project is to document the partly unknown biological values (for Norwegian conditions), increase knowledge about epigeic and edaphic inververtebrates in Norwegian production systems, and to look at the effects of various agricultural practices and management intensities on selected faunal groups (spiders and springtails).

Edaphic controls: Permafrost, not cold temperatures per se, is generally believed to be what prevents tree growth.
Furthermore, freeze-thaw activity, a thin active layer, and solifluction during the warmer months contribute to strong controls on vegetation patterns and create a mosaic of microhabitats and plant communities.

The study of such edaphically differentiated plants has provided valuable insight to the role of natural selection in evolution.
This paper discusses several key studies that have appeared in the literature in the last half century emphasizing the role unusual soil conditions—such as those found on serpentinite outcrops, mine tailings, guano deposits, and salt flats—can play in the diversification of plant species.
Many of these studies have not only shown adaptive differentiation in response to various edaphic features, but have also attempted to examine the link between adaptive traits and traits that are directly responsible for reproductive isolation between the divergent taxa.
