The Scotsman - Obituaries - Eddie Bracken
AN owl-faced, comedy character actor for more than seven decades, Eddie Bracken made his greatest impression as the nervous, flustered and long-suffering protagonist of two of Preston Sturges’s finest freewheeling wartime comedies - The Miracle Of Morgan’s Creek (1944) and Hail The Conquering Hero (1944).
The comedy giant Preston Sturges made the best use of his gauche gullibility and comic timing, especially in Hail The Conquering Hero, where his character, Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith, is rejected for military service on the grounds of chronic hay fever yet winds up feted as a combat veteran, self-effacing hero and potential mayor.
Bracken’s popularity faded in the postwar years, despite a successful radio series, The Eddie Bracken Show (1945-46) and supporting roles in the Judy Garland musical Summer Stock (1950) and We’re Not Married (1952).

Sullen and defiant, Trudy turns to her local admirer, the homely, stuttering 4-F Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken), asking him to pick her up for a night at the movies but drop her off at the dance instead.
The picture was bolstered by excellent casting, in particular Betty Hutton and Eddie Bracken, who had appeared together in two previous films — in this turn, they virtually feed off each other's manic energy.
And just like those long walks, Morgan's Creek definitely is going somewhere — although the "miracle" itself is saved for the final moments, captured in yet another image of perpetual motion as the perplexed Norval Jones is taken to his wife's hospital room, thrust ever forward by the riotous crush of rowdy celebrants.

At about the same time they produced a marvelous LP record, "archy and mehitabel: a back-alley opera," that featured the voices of Carol Channing as Mehitabel and Eddie Bracken as Archy, with an additional, spoken-word performance by David Wayne titled "echoes of archy" (Columbia ML 4963).
Theatre Arts magazine said of the record: "Bracken is every inch a cockroach, and Miss Channing is perfection as the female feline who chose Shinbone Alley over the comforts of domestication." The record can occasionally be found today in used-record stores and online auctions, as can a two-record, 45-rpm version (Columbia A-1107).
