Gaven became the youngest player to sign with MLS, doing so at the age of 16 years and two months (since passed by Freddy Adu), joining the league after having spent two years training with other promising young Americans at the USSF's Bradenton Academy.
Eddie was drafted by the MetroStars with the twelfth overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft.
Gaven played every minute for the U.S. in the 2003 Under-17 World Championship in Finland and then became the youngest player in CONCACAF history to appear in an Olympic qualifier when he played for the U.S. Under-23 team.

With all of the talk of Eddie being shipped here and there and other screams from Metroland for a quality striker, you tend to wonder why Gaven shouldn't be simply placed up front and given a chance to bag his fair share of goals.
Eddie has played the striker role for the U-17's and U-20's, all be it sparingly, and even for Metro.
Gaven will score goals, just because he finds himself to be in the position to be a goal, but Gaven is made to be a runner with the ball through the midfield.

MetroStars midfielder Eddie Gaven will be sidelined from three to four weeks after undergoing surgery on his left ring finger, the MLS club announced on Thursday morning.
Gaven suffered a displaced fracture of his left ring finger while playing for the U.S. Under-20 team in the Suwon International Youth Football Tournament in Suwon, South Korea on March 26.
Gaven also received his first cap in an international friendly against Poland on July 11 when he entered the 1-1 game in the 82nd minute, making him the fourth youngest player in U.S. history to play in a National Team game.
