Eddie Murphy Raw (1987)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Raw is funny at times, but the pacing was off.
Eddie seems tired in his delivery, and the camera work was a bit shoddy.
Part of Eddie's genius is how he uses his whole body to convey his comedy, and the camera robs us of this performance by only showing him from his chest and up.

  EDDIE MURPHY RAW - DVD
The message is clear: Murphy had become myth, one of the biggest box-office draws in the world, with the faith of the audience in his pocket--and 1987 was the time to capitalize on it.
Murphy is so obsessed with the subject, in fact, that he kills almost an hour in order to vent his spleen.
The crucial factor that distinguishes Murphy from Richard Pryor, the comic to whom he seemed the heir apparent, is that Pryor made himself vulnerable to the audience, revealing his foibles as well as his fears, while Murphy is bulletproof and without sin.

 Eddie Murphy: Raw
Decades ago, Eddie Murphy’s successful standup act earned him a Grammy for “Comedian” (culled from “Delirious,” a smash special endlessly rerun on HBO and a huge video hit), and prompted high hopes for his film “Raw.” Hollywood’s wonder boy was in the midst of his glory years.
Murphy would soon retreat from fame, fans and the public eye, preferring instead to stay within a close-knit circle of family and friends.
Although “Raw” debuted at #1 at the box office during the holiday season and would go on to become the highest-grossing film of its genre, it would be the third straight Murphy effort to make lots of dough and get critically panned.

Eddie Murphy Raw, a 1987 concert film featuring the comic at one of his popular peaks, shows him at a crossroads.
Possibility is the key here: Murphy doesn't seem to be referring to any specific relationship experience of his; rather, the mere idea that a woman could take money from him in a divorce settlement fills him with rage.
This is where Murphy approaches the storytelling skills of Pryor and Cosby, mixed with a sketch comedian's gonzo willingness to take a joke to its surreal extremes.

Anyone who is a fan of Eddie Murphy's stand-up comedy only knows too well hard difficult it is to get hold of a copy of his best and most sort after live performance, Delirious.
While RAW doesn't come as close to the shocking hard edged humour of Delirious, it does manage to deliver brief moments of inspired hilarity, some of which are channelled directly from the spirit of his superior stand-up outing.
This time around, RAW, shot in 1987, is more of a look back the 80's as Eddie primarily tackles promiscuity, marriage, divorce and women's liberation, with a few nice splashes of his home life as a kid thrown in for good measure.

Eddie Murphy: Raw | Retro Junk
T is confused by Murphy's verbal slight-of-hand; and even paragon of calm Bill Cosby loses his cool while chastising the comic for his dirty mouth.
After some digressions finding humor in racial differences and other matters, Murphy proceeds into the centerpiece of his act, a series of routines about contemporary relationships between men and women, including an extended bit about what life would be like were he to become married — jokes that some have criticized as heavily misogynist.
Finally, Murphy concludes his set with an extended, comedic but sympathetic reminiscence about his childhood and family life, a tone that matches that of the film's prologue — a fictional re-creation of Murphy, in his childhood, entertaining a family gathering with what turns out to be an inappropriately off-color joke.

AMCTV.com SHOW - Eddie Murphy Raw
Unbound by network TV censors, former "Saturday Night Live" regular Eddie Murphy does a profanely funny stand-up routine before a sold-out audience at New York's Felt Forum in this comedy concert film.
The movie begins with a tongue-in-cheek flashback that shows Little Eddie shocking a family Christmas gathering back in 1968 with a gross-out joke.
After that, however, it's strictly a one-man show, as Murphy storms through an R-rated monologue while a guffawing audience roars its approval.

Eddie Murphy Raw at NoFace for Film
In Raw, Murphy is at his comedic finest.
Wearing a godawful purple leather jacket with a pair of matching tight purple leather pants, Murphy covers a range of topics from the consequences of not signing a prenuptial agreement; cheating in relationships; Bill Cosby’s discomfort with Murphy’s use of profanity during his routines; and the pumped-up ego that befalls Italian-Americans after watching Rocky.
But then you have to consider that Murphy (and Richard Pryor before him) were the pioneers of this kind of humor, and without Murphy’s unapologetic candor and use of profanity on stage, we wouldn’t have young comedians like Rock and Chappelle.
