Topic: Eddie Perez (politician)

  Strong Mayor Is Sworn In
Eddie A. Perez promised to reinvent Hartford and its oft-maligned government as he took the oath of office Monday night as the city's first strong mayor under a new charter.
Perez, 46, the city's first Latino mayor, was first elected in November 2001 to a two-year term as a mayor with few statutory powers.
Perez on Monday proposed no major new initiatives in his inaugural address, instead reiterating his previous commitments to increase home-ownership and the number of children attending four-year colleges.

It wasn't the best time to have these discussions, he said: The legislative session was wrapping up, and Perez had had a couple of years to deal with the tax issue.
But I suspect Perez banked on Amann being enough of a pro not to punish the city because of the man. It's just not smart politics.
The Perez-engineered exclusion of Gonzalez and her 3rd District colleagues from Hartford's delegation to the upcoming state convention has sparked a challenge to the validity of the city's slate of delegates.

Eddie Perez, mayor of Hartford, Conn., received strong-mayor power two years ago but has used his veto just once, saying it is essential to govern by consensus.
Elsewhere, Dave Fischer, the pioneering strong mayor in St. Petersburg, Fla., refused to use executive veto power during the two years he had it, and Eddie Perez in Hartford, Conn., has used his mayoral veto just once since winning the power two years ago.
Perez, who used his veto in Hartford to reject a council directive to investigate allegations of police brutality, said it is essential for the mayor and his staff to rule by consensus.

Eric R. Danton | Sound Check: Politicians and Pitney
Politicians just can't resist the urge to take credit for things they had nothing to do with, and the life of Connecticut-born music legend Gene Pitney is no exception.
I received three different press releases yesterday from vote-grubbers eager to trumpet their tenuous connections to the Rockville Rocket, who died unexpectedly Wednesday while on tour in Wales.
The singer was actually born in Hartford, though, and Mayor Eddie A. Perez couldn't resist weighing in, either (though I would bet money that one of his puppeteers had to tell him who Pitney was):

Mayor Perez understands that a city cannot succeed without great public schools, the type that attract and retain children from all backgrounds and prepare them to compete in today's global economy.
In essence, both Perez and DeStefano seem to believe that a strong hand is required to turn around dangerously awful school systems like Hartford's, and that a board that is entirely elected by the voters and separate from the mayor's office can't do it.

Citing New York's Lincoln Center and Baltimore's Inner Harbor developments, Perez said "New Orleans and Louisiana will not be able to develop" if eminent domain powers are restricted.
