Newhouse News Service - Coaching Icon Eddie Robinson Dies At 88 |
 | | Robinson coached at Grambling, a small, rural, predominantly African-American north Louisiana school, for six decades, a span in which the Tigers recorded 408 victories, most amassed by any coach at the time of his retirement in 1997. |
 | | Robinson became the head coach at Grambling — then called Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute — before bombs were dropped on Pearl Harbor, and stayed at his job through four major wars, the administrations of 11 U.S. presidents, and unparalleled social change which accented his accomplishments. |
 | | The first third of Robinson's 57-year career at Grambling was during the South's Jim Crow era, a time in which, despite the restrictions of segregation, he learned and honed his coaching skills — and excelled to an inordinate degree. |
