Edwin Americus Rommel (September 13, 1897 - August 26, 1970) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics from 1920 to 1932 and is considered to be the "father" of the modern knuckleball.
Rommel made many relief apperances during his career leading the American League the in relief wins in three different seasons.
Rommel was the second base umpire for the one-game playoff to decide the 1948 AL pennant.

I noticed while using Eddie Rommel that the "stuff" ratings of the pitchers are very low.
Rommel had a 1, Lefty Grove had a 41, and Lefty Gomez from the Yankees had a 46.
I understand that Rommel only pitched until 1932 and he was 32 years old and on his way out, but Grove and Gomez were the premier pitchers of that day.

Now Eddie Rommel wasn't a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher by any means but he pitched 12 years with the A's from 1920-1932 and went 171-111 with a 3.54 ERA.
Rommel - see page here at b-f.com - is an interesting case indeed with so few K's.
It seems that those pitchers who regularly gave up less hits per balls in play than their team-mates as well as the rest of the league had to have some ability to prevent or reduce the chance of hits on balls in play which was statistically significant.
