"Edelweiss": I think that the way this song uses something so tiny to represent all the wonderful things that are to be left behind - the loss of an entire way of life and everything that is familiar - is remarkably touching.
Like "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" in Cabaret, the dramatic and contextual placement of this song enlarge the symbolism of the material into something that is theatrically effective, becoming an essential signifier in the show's semiotic framework.
Even though it may not be as sophisticated as say, "Tradition" (from Fiddler on the Roof), it's just as perfectly tailored to situation and character and shows how RandH were always working towards keeping the dramatic momentum of their musicals in motion.
