The Edelweiss Pirates (Edelweißpiraten) were a loose group of youth culture in Nazi Germany.
The chief of the Cologne Gestapo fell victim to the Pirates in the autumn of 1944.
October 1944 the situation was so serious that the national leader of the SS (Heinrich Himmler) issued an ordinance for the ‘combating of youth cliques’ at the end of a long series of actions aimed at defeating the youth and protest movements.

What you see with the edelweiss pirates is a strange mix of pre-Beat hippiedom, traits of an autonomous youth culture (they even styled a certain look to recognize each other!), political resistance and dare devil mentality.
After the war this perception of the edelweiss pirates didn't change substantially, and I know only of one small plaque in Cologne reminding of them (especially of the hanging).
Maybe the edelweiss pirates used tactics we would frown upon under normal conditions.

A few thoughts inspired by the Edelweiss Pirates article in the last issue and discussions that followed it on why the working class were subdued in Germany in the 1930s.
We take the view that the liberation of the working class must be the work of the working class itself and that the working class will develop political consciousness as a result of its own struggle.
It surely follows for us that the Edwelweiss Pirates’ existence and their struggles are in themselves put ‘a working class perspective’ on what happened in that era.
