eden ahbez, born Alexander Aberle, (April 15, 1908 - March 4, 1995) was one of the few genuinely unique characters of pre-rock American popular music.
His most comprehensive statement as a recording artist, however, was the 1960 LP Eden's Island, a bizarre record which mixed exotica album and beatnik poetry.
Ahbez was also photographed with Brian Wilson in the studio in 1966, lending further credence to the theory that the head Beach Boy was influenced by exotica during the Pet Sounds and Smile sessions.

Some of the luster was taken off that triumph when a publishing company claimed that Ahbez had taken some of the lyrics from "Nature Boy" from one of their copyrights, the Yiddish song "Schweig Mein Hertz" (the parties reached an out-of-court settlement).

 Eden Ahbez
Ahbez was a legend in Hollywood for his unusual life style.
Although Ahbez (or "ahbez," as he insisted in being called, holding that capital letters should be reserved for the divine) later had another tune, "Land of Love," recorded by Cole, he faded back onto the street corners until 1960, when Del-Fi Records boss Bob Keane brought him into the studio to record Eden's Island.
Ahbez popped up in a few different places during the 1960s, most prominently with Brian Wilson somewhere in the days before the legendary Pet Sounds and Smile albums were recorded.

Eden's Island should be fully considered as part of the "exotica" genre that then-contemporary artists such as Martin Denny, Les Baxter, and Esquivel had defined through popular recordings by that time, but there's an air of authenticity to Ahbez's efforts that still transcend the form some 35 years after the fact.
Ahbez described himself in his Last Will and Testament as "a man possessed of the universal and cosmic vision of the Miracle of Nature." Ahbez was indeed a man "possessed," one who was truly New Age (in its most positive connotations) long before it was fashionable.

Eden Ahbez was best known for writing "Nature Boy" - a big hit for Nat "King" Cole.
This album, however, should be viewed as an instrumental album (a Martin Denny style cross between islandesque and jazz music - featuring jazz great Paul Moer!) with a sort of beat poetry accompanying it.
(Bob Keane of Del-Fi Records described Ahbez's lyrics as a cross between Kahil Gibran and Rod McKuen.) In any event, the lyrics and the music work together to create a very ethereal sound that is absolutely haunting - in a positive way!
