It seems that Buchanan's decision to submit a proposal to the Ford Foundation was based on the fact that the University of Virginia had never approached the Ford Foundation, which thus remained an unexplored and potentially very large source of funding.
Buchanan had explained that this application was not for fluid research and graduate student support through the economics department, but rather should be considered on the basis that there was no other comparable program in the country, that the Center was a going concern, and that its success required continuity in support.

Literally in the middle of nowhere, an outpost for east- or westbound stagecoaches to stop and let passengers stretch and have a bite to eat becomes the scene of a life-or-death struggle between four desperate prison escapees and two strangers, one of them with a baby to look after.
A stagecoach comes through and two of the passengers, a young woman (Susan Hayward) and a toddler, are forced to stay because four men have escaped from a nearby prison and the stagecoach line isn't allowed to risk the lives of females or children on the road.
Buchanan is murdered outright by the gang's resident psychotic (played with fantastic gusto by perennial bad guy Jack Elam), leaving Power and Hayward to try and figure out a way to escape before the hammer falls on them, too.

Brennan and Buchanan shine brightest in this one; Brennan as the gun slinger who's lost a bit of speed on his quick draw and Buchanan as the scout who's eyesight has deteriorated to the point that he's drawing his guns on stuffed and mounted bears.
With a better script, and a more delicate and penetrating examination of what it feels like to suddenly find yourself old and in the way, this one could have been a classic for the ages rather than an amusing piece of fluff.
