Whitcomb ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1954 and for the Senate in 1964.
A conservative Republican, Whitcomb sought the Republican nomination for United States senator in 1976 and was defeated by Richard Lugar.

Edgar ("Ed") D. Whitcomb enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1940 and was commissioned a second lieutenant the following year with the rating of aerial navigator.
Whitcomb served the state of Indiana as a senator, secretary of state and governor.
Whitcomb's experiences of evading capture, then later being taken prisoner by the Japanese, escaping by an all-night swim from Corregidor, his recapture, and his ultimate repatriation from China as a civilian under an assumed name.

The Whitcomb mss., 1933-1985, consist of the papers of Edgar Doud Whitcomb, 1917-, lawyer and former governor of Indiana.
Correspondence with his parents, 1933-1942, includes his letter dated Feb. 23, 1942 from Clark Field in the Philippines just before his capture, internment, and escape from the Japanese.
The majority of the remaining collection concerns Whitcomb's book about this experience, ESCAPE FROM CORREGIDOR (H. Regnery: Chicago, 1958), including correspondence with the publisher as well as the original manuscript, book production and promotion materials, galley proofs, and reviews.

The U.S. Uniform Time Act of 1966 required the observance of DST, in the Eastern Time Zone, from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October each year.
In 1969, an Indiana House bill was passed by the Legislature to exempt Indiana from DST in the Eastern Time Zone, but was vetoed by Governor Edgar D. Whitcomb.
Throughout 1969 and 1970, all of Indiana observed DST, but Gov. Whitcomb’s veto then was overridden in 1971.

Requested were credit card statements and receipts associated with trips made by Williamston Mayor Phillip Clardy and other town officials to Washington, D. in May 2005 and to Hilton Head in 2005.
In an interview this week, Mayor Clardy said that the purpose of trips to Washington, D. in 2004 and 2005 were to attend a National Open Government forum.
The trips were hosted by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce and included many local government officials from area muncipalities and Anderson County, he said.
