Kain began his flying training in January 1937 and in late November was posted to 73 Squadron.
Kain went on leave to England on 2 April and before he returned his engagement was announced.
Kain continued to fly as his unit retreated from one airfield to the next and on 5 June he shot down a Bf 109.

Known throughout the British Empire in 1940 as ‘Cobber’ Kain the fighter ace, Edgar James Kain was born on 27 June 1918 at Hastings, the son of Nellie Maria Keen and her husband, George William Reginald Kain, a warehouseman.
Kain’s elementary flying training was at a civil school at Brough, Humberside, after which he was promoted to acting pilot officer on 21 December.
When the Germans launched their attack on the Low Countries and France, Kain was in the thick of the action, destroying three enemy aircraft between 10 and 12 May, and claiming two more on the 19th.

During one of the many Choloy funerals that I attended, the officer in charge of the guard told us that a famous flyer from WW2 was buried here and if we were interested he would take us over to his gravesite.

Edgar “Cobber” Kain was born at Hastings on 27 June 1918, was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, and studied mathematics at the University Tutorial School, Wellington, under Professor Von Zedlitz.
Flying Officer Kain became almost a legend during his brief but glorious career as “one of the few”.
His friendly disposition and general lightheartedness earned him the sobriquet “Cobber”, and as Cobber Kain he is better known to the wartime generation of servicemen and civilians alike than as Flying Officer Edgar Kain.

We have often wondered why the British or American film studios have not made a film about the life and death of Edgar James Kain, the New Zealander who became the first Allied air ace of World War II – and perhaps the first ace to die.
Known affectionately to his fellow fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain as “Cobber,” the lanky Kiwi led a glamorous life in and out of the cockpit.

Kain began a long glide to French territory starting from 20,000 feet.
At one point the engine caught fire and Kain was about to bail when he discovered his parachute had been damaged.
