When Matias first thought of the concept, he said "it was just too early for it to be feasible -- computers weren't portable enough to make a device small enough to use the keyboard."

ATPM 10.09 - Review: Tactile Pro
Edgar Matias informed me that the Alps keyswitches used in the Extended Keyboard I and Extended Keyboard II are no longer being manufactured, and that the Tactile Pro uses a descendent of these switches that’s a cross between the two.
The Micro Connectors keyboard was made in the same factory as the Tactile Pro, but it uses a fourth type of switch, which I think is between the Extended Keyboard II and the Tactile Pro (closer to the Tactile Pro).
Matias has not been able to re-create Apple’s keyboards of yore, but it has built a solid product: the lone Mac clicker in a membrane world.

HalfKey is based on the work of Edgar Matias (with whom we are not affiliated); in 1993, he described the idea of a modifier-key based design for a one-handed QWERTY keyboard.
A formal explanation of Half-QWERTY is given in Edgar Matias' paper, One-handed touch typing on a QWERTY keyboard.

Joe Clark: Half-QWERTY: The sound of one hand typing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
There are ways to type one-handed, including a relatively new technique that sounds crazier than it is. Half-QWERTY, a software product from Toronto inventor Edgar Matias, lets you type all the letters and numbers on a computer keyboard with one hand.
After about ten hours of practice, most test subjects were typing with one hand at over 50% of their two-handed typing speeds; one subject hit 88% of her two-handed rate.
Naturally, though, there are problems: The prosaic name (Matias is trying to dream up something snappier) and the fact that Half-QWERTY is not entirely transparent.

When you look more closely, you realize that Matias has done something that would seem obvious except for the fact that no one has done it before: they printed the Option- and Shift-Option-characters on every keycap.
Most vendors have moved to a lower-cost clone of the keyswitch, but when Edgar tried a sample keyboard they sent him, he thought it felt awful, with a touch so light it was tricky to avoid typing a character if he so much as touched a keycap.
Luckily, Edgar was able to convince the Alps factory in Taiwan to keep the tooling active for him by committing to buy a million keyswitches.
