Schein sees process consultation as an emergent and continuous process that takes a balanced approach between concern for human issues, process and long-range effectiveness, on the one hand, and tasks, content and short-run efficiency or expediency on the other hand.
Schein insists that process consultation is focused on both structure and process as some processes are entrenched to the point that they become part of the structure (1988, 17).
Schein's book was a pioneer in moving many of these issues forward and played an important role in bringing the focus to the human side of the equation at work.

(Schein, p.11) This approach is contrasted with that of the "expert" or "doctor" roles; the consultant is not expected to arrive on the scene with answers to every problem, nor a prescription to fix whatever ailment the organization has identified.
Schein describes some of the roles common to both consultants and managers, for example, the provision and analysis of data, problem-diagnosis and training functions.
Schein concludes Volume II with a brief yet personally candid discussion of some of the ethical issues that consultants sometimes face, and some overall conclusions about the helping process in organizations.

Ed Schein was educated at the University of Chicago, at Stanford University where he received a Masters Degree in Psychology in 1949, and at Harvard University where he received his Ph.D. in social psychology in 1952.
From 1968 to 1971 Schein was the Undergraduate Planning Professor for MIT, and in 1972 he became the Chairman of the Organization Studies Group of the MIT Sloan School, a position he held until 1982.
Schein has received many honors and awards for his writing and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Academy of Management.

With mergers and acquisitions throwing disparate corporate cultures together at an unprecedented rate, the need to find a common ground and create effective business practices has become a real problem; Schein's methodologies and models should be welcome tools in helping companies reevaluate and reform their identities.
This book is of Schein's usual high caliber and contains an incredible amount of useful information for both the consultant and the manager.
My one criticism would be that when read consecutively, the chapter topics did not seem to flow logically (to his credit, the author does state in the introduction that he designed the book to be read in such a way that people could skip around to what interested them).
