Pope John Paul has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Edgardo Gabriel Storni, an Argentine prelate who quit last week amid accusations that he abused seminary students, the Vatican said yesterday.
The Vatican said the Pope had accepted Storni's resignation according to a Church law which urges a prelate to resign if a "serious reason" makes him unable to fulfil his office.
Storni, archbishop of one of Argentina's biggest cities, Santa Fe, had been under mounting pressure from judicial probes.

In a written statement issued on 25 September, Archbishop Edgardo Gabriel Storni of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz denied the charges, saying his resignation "in no way signifies guilt on my part, nor does it mean I accept the allegations".
In his statement made from Rome, Archbishop Storni wrote that in the face of the "unstoppable manoeuvres against archdiocesan persons and institutions, perplexity grips all, at all levels".
In her book, Nuestra Santa Madre (Our Holy Mother), Wornat says that the Vatican investigated Archbishop Storni in 1994 after almost a decade of rumours of sexual abuse, which began shortly after his appointment in 1984, but dropped the case because of lack of evidence.

An Argentine archbishop accused of sexually abusing seminary students resigned on Wednesday under mounting pressure from judicial probes and allegations against him, a lawmaker said.
Monsignor Edgardo Storni (pictured), archbishop of one of Argentina´s largest cities Santa Fe since 1992, resigned in Rome, where he was taking part in a conference with Pope John Paul II.
The Vatican ordered an investigation of Storni in 1994 on sexual abuse allegations that concluded there was no supporting evidence.
