Edgecumbe acts as the main service town for the agricultural region surrounding the plains of the Rangitaiki River, which flows through the town.
The volcanic cone of Mount Edgecumbe, 15 kilometres to the south and close to the town of Kawerau, is easily visible from Edgecumbe.

Mount Edgecumbe or Putauaki is an extinct volcanic cone in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand 50 km east of Rotorua and three km east of Kawerau.
The mountain rises to 820 m above sea level, and is visible from the waters of the bay, 30 km to the north.

 DNZB / BIOGRAPHY
George Edgecumbe was born on 4 January 1845 at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, the son of Martha Eyles and her husband, Henry Edgecumbe, a grocer and later a brewer.
An earnest Anglican churchman, Edgecumbe was closely involved with the administration of St Peter's Church, and in 1886 he successfully led the change from the subscription system to free and open membership.
George Edgecumbe died at Remuera on 11 March 1930 and was buried in the same plot as his wife in Hamilton West cemetery.

The Edgecumbe earthquake (March 2, 1987, 0142 UT, 37.92 °S, 176.76 °E) occurred beneath a coastal river plain a the southeastern margin of the Central Volcanic Region (CVF) of the North Island of New Zealand, a back arc basin that is widening at a geodetically determined rate of about 12 mm/yr.
The Edgecumbe earthquake was preceded by a large number of foreshocks, some near the mainshock, but most in a tight cluster 35 km away to the northwest (i.e., off-strike).
This foreshock activity and the widespread nature of the aftershocks are attributed to a level of stress throughout the CVR that is permanently close to the critical level for shear failure.
