Edgeplay is not a film intended to excite, gawk, or fawn over it's subjects, and I say subjects rather than "subject" intentionally, as it's a film about people, not about the rock 'n roll lifestyle.
Edgeplay is a documentary about the all-girl hard-rock band The Runaways, who so much like their tourmates The Ramones, set the next two decades on fire, without getting any of the credit or rewards.
Victory Tischler-Blue, the director, writer and concience of Edgeplay, endured a 6-year trial-by-fire getting this film made and released,(and is a story as compelling as any in her movie), and I think much of the raw honesty and poignance in this film is in some ways a direct result of that struggle.

There was a huge problem during production of Edgeplay, Victory Tischler-Blue's film about the Runaways, the all female rock band that blazed their way from 1975 - 1999.
Tischler-Blue mixes in old footage with in-depth interviews of the former band members, and has them talk at length about their experiences in the late seventies.

She was the good-time girl of the band, wanting to party and rock and just have some fun.
While the Runaways may not be widely known even to this day, their influence is evident in the Riot Grrrl rock movement of the early 90’s, Hole, The Donnas, scores of other female-fronted bands and women who have had the audacity to rock hard and play their own guitar solos.
Edgeplay is a fitting tribute to the Runaways, flavored with the same sincerity, audacity, and independent spirit that originally defined the band and rock and roll itself.

Warner Music Australia Product: EDGEPLAY - A FILM ABOUT THE RUNAWAYS
Signed almost immediately to a major record label deal, the band was dubbed “jailbait rock” by the press and became an overnight media sensation.
EDGEPLAY chronicles the rise of the band, its hopes and dreams, and its eventual disintegration as the result of media belittling, in-fighting and drug use amidst rumors of verbal and emotional abuse by the band’s management.
Produced and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Victory Tischler-Blue, one of the Runaways’ bass players, the film presents an unflinching insider’s view of what it was like for six teenaged girls to be thrust into the limelight with minimal adult supervision in a “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” era hostile to female musicians.

Edgeplay: A Film About The Runaways does have what you would expect in a rock doc: stories about abuse, abortions, sex, drugs, alcohol, suicide attempts, in-fighting, and life on the road.

Sure, it shatters a lot of the fantasy bubbles I had about the band but the revelations here are sadly quite eye-opening, making their history, in hindsight, seemed doomed from the outset.

Years before the Go-Go's and the Bangles proved the commercial viability of all-female rock bands (and while Courtney Love was still in grade school), the Runaways were blazing new trails for women in rock & roll.
A number of the group's better known songs do not appear in Edgeplay, due to the fact that Joan Jett refused to cooperate with the making of the film or allow her songs to be used on the soundtrack.

The Runaways were an all girl group ahead of their time, and their story goes way beyond the usual sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll clichés, allegedly involving emotional, psychological and physical abuse, lesbian trysts, suicide attempts, violent fights, and too much fast food.

City Pages - Movies - Edgeplay: A Film about the Runaways
With future stars Joan Jett and Lita Ford on guitar, lingering accusations of abuse, and a polysexual L.A. milieu that exceeded even fan fantasies, the Runaways were born to be the subject of a future exposé.
Yet for reasons that are easy to guess at, the low-budget Edgeplay, directed by the group's second bassist, Victory Tischler-Blue (formerly Vicki Blue), is the first.
Let's hope it's not the last: Jett refused to participate or grant permission to use the band's songs; the surreal result is a Runaways movie without "Cherry Bomb" and with only two short concert sequences, both covers.
