ABDUL SATTAR EDHI was born in 1928 in Bantva, a village on the Kathiawar Peninsula, in Gujarat, Western India.
Shortly thereafter (1954) EDHI opened an orphanage and a maternity home for unwed mothers, and put appeals in the newspaper requesting that illegitimate babies be left on his doorstep rather than strangled or buried alive as was often the case.
EDHI hopes to establish an ambulance center every 25 miles along the highway since many people lose their lives after accidents because they are not hospitalized in time.

KARACHI, Sept 19: Four ambulances of the Edhi Foundation were snatched at gunpoint during the last four years, however, only one vehicle has been recovered after paying ransom by the Foundation.
A spokesman for the foundation said that recently a Hyuandi ambulance (EA-1585) was recovered from Dera Bugti by the Edhi Foundation after paying Rs200,000 as ransom.
Similarly, an ambulance (EA-1390), was hijacked at gunpoint on Jan 1, 2003, in front of the Edhi Centre, Muree, and ambulance (EA-1330) was taken away at gunpoint in Jamshoro.

ISLAMABAD: In view of persistent request of Edhi Foundation, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reviewed the matter for change of code from 115 to 1150 and has decided to restore 115 to Ambulance Service of Edhi Foundation.
Previous decision was taken by the Authority in good faith and in the larger public interest to accommodate other emergency service providers, who will also need short codes to cater for emergency services.
It may be recalled that the emergency ambulance service has already been categorized as the help line obligatory service to be provided by all the telecom operators and no call will be charged from fixed line as well as mobile phone to access Ambulance codes by the service providers.
